Dropped the tank on the Clubby Estate as I think I sucked up some crap whilst on the motorway last Thursday which caused a bit of consternation. The car just would not accelerate and slowed to a virtual stop. Idled fine though so was a bit perplexed. Managed to get it off the motorway, used the choke to give me a bit of oomph and took a guess that a bit of crud had been sucked into the carb. The car came back after a few miles and is fine now. New inline fuel filter fitted by the carb yesterday to prevent this happening again.
I needed to drop the tank anyway to replace the sender unit so I thought I clean it too. The screws holding the tank in looked original and a pain to get out. Tank was dropped, old sender unit removed and there was a lot of lacquer at the bottom of the tank. I got out as much as I could, sprayed the fuel pickup with cleaner and reassembled the tank with a new sender unit and fuel filler sponge.
It wasn't too bad getting it back on, the new sponge is twice as thick as the old one so that was a big of a fight. I had a new set of screws for the tank luckily. The petrol pipe union was a bit of a faff to get on but went in after a few minutes. Put about 6 litres in, started the car, no leaks and the fuel gauge moved a smidgeon so I count that as a success!
I Lanoguarded everywhere whilst the tank was out. Looks like the boot floor panel is new too, which is a bonus.
