Fitted a reversing light switch to the rod change unit of the '80 clubman estate and connected up.  There's a wire along to the rear so now to decide finally on what type of reversing light to use.

Not strictly today, but the other evening I went up to a new local cafe in a nearby village with some other classic car-driving friends to help promote their opening. Today I find my car is in the local paper!

The owner's daughter took a real shine to the Mini, and posed for the journalist who was there.

All good advice, thanks.

MIG - Clarke 130EN.

Cheers!

Thanks. Basically, I knew I could enjoy it,  I used to, but wasn't recently.

I was trained in gas welding, had earlier in life some fair amount of enjoyable practice on old cars too with gas, and then later MIG...

I asked myself why?  O_O  I couldn't exactly answer it, but knoew it was down to 'setting up the job and my  subtlely (to me)  bad  attitude!

And so was determined to do enjoy - or write it all off as a place I shouldn't go anymore! Failure. oNot much of an example to my cildren.

Earlier in life when I was getting to grips with welding on old cars, it was astonishing as a challenge, and I was natrurally in no hurry, it was a true adventure. But now recently I had been telling myself , I can do it, and set it to be done in two days or whatever! It was grim.

Part of the problem, lies of course when preparing the metal,  we may  resist seeing  the extent of the area under consideration  for repair as it grows whilst we commence and continue with preparation!  :shy: . Well , we find out anyway; Sod that! It doesn't matter! (the expense on pre-fabricated metal parts does, but can't be helped). So then, I approached that part of it with a cavelier attitude!  :D

As far as no hurry goes,  on old cars especially, the welding itself takes very specific attention to what is in front of you and your body posture, and also I would say welding, like real criaft, takes magnificent poise. Absolute comfort lies also in your attitude.

Welders are never in a hurry, no craftsman ever is, and THAT is actually a big part of the attraction that keeps one committed to such a life.

And as an side my political statement, I have to make in solidarity,  should  the oportunity arise:

Pity the life of craftsmen in the lcal economy is becoming out-priced and so, impossible,  in a command-ecnconomy run by giant careless conglomorations oover out-sourced autoatic factories.  Much has to do with the fsalse price of housing, and yards etc. I am very sorry and angry about that.

We  lose our power as  local communites by  loss of ownership of local economy,  to  corporate-globalist-servig central government as opposed to parish councils having power! Yes that is true demcrqcy - parish councils, to which councils are sub-survient, and so too is central government legislation to servre commerce anbd threfore what is called  'progress', but is actually just takeover by technology in service of factory owners and their specially hawkish and  obedient managment class which belongs nowhere and threfore only baposts about globe-trotting, of course.

That effects the crafts and agroiculture. It's terible and I fight it, teach my children al about it, and make it know of my indignation; its disintegration of society and community and independence (ok slavery).

I've had a  neighbour's girl walk buy aged about  eight years old say "taht's the car I want when I'm older"  :shifty: Lots of female admirers.

Seems like the Fiat 500 doesn't cut it... that's know amongst women's circles as 'the bitches car', :ohno:  according ot my young daughter.

A few years ago, for a couple of months my 28 year old daughter used my old Mini as her daily driver, she complained that she continually got into conversation with "old" people who wanted to tell her all about their first Minis, she loved every minute though.  By contrast some time soon afterwards she bought a Fiat 500 and hated it. She said it made her look like a 17 year old who'd just passed their driving test!

Restored my faded old dash switches to looking as good as new by copying @Retro_10s repair. Very happy with the result.

Removed the badly fitted carb bulkhead box, trimmed it to make it smaller to suit what I needed, and re-fitted.

Pulled the old girl out of the garage as she hasn't been used for a month, fired into life on second turn once fuel was in the carb so let her run for a bit, gave her a quick clean with meguiars waterless wash & wax, touched up a couple of small bits with some touch up paint I had made up to the colour code & then tucked her back in the garage with the indoor cover on her as well, will take her out next Sunday if it's nice, then have a few little jobs lined up for over winter including finding a professional upholster to repair my driver's seat, teardrops etc & possibly the side cover oil leak or might leave that one until it warms up
