Took the pistons out of my mini clubman 1098 engine. 15 thou clearance between top of piston and bore at half stroke and the oil control rings had no tension at all.  No wonder it was smoking so badly.

Uncovered it and woke it from its winter sleep, battery dead so just pushed it out from its resting place.

Had a look over and inspected suspected problems ready for the summer and ended up with a £600 mini spares order

Hopefully everything will be good for IMM 2023

Investigated the mileometer on the clubman estate to see why it doesn't advance.  Couldn't see anything obvious.  Checked the lights after instrument refit and found they went dead.  Much puzzling, with voltage at the switch, good switch connections and resistance on the downstream wires as well.  Traced to corroded contacts on the fuse box. allowing voltage but not current on the input wire....

Had a new tyre fitted to the nearside front on the GT

Apparently it's not acceptable to close one eye, look down the side of the car, then close the other to look down the other side when setting the car up to check the tracking. What idiot would do that lol

Walked past it in the garage to valet my daily, that reminds me.... I need to check tyre pressures and fluid levels. Since its tune up by Jim Wilson (local AC Dodd trained specialist) all I've done is a little tweak to the off choke idle speed (was a touch too low and was on the verge of stalling) other than that its great, starts first turn and will do 1k miles in a day if it has to lol

I've been using & enjoying the Mini a bit this week as the nice weather is now with us & recently joined the London & Surrey Mini Owners Club, also going to start preparing it for the London to Brighton, a few little jobs to do before then but nothing major, new teardrop mounts along with the rear mounts on the front subframe, upper steady bushes, gold pinstripe on the sides as it is wrong etc silly little things😁 also decided to get to the bottom off an oil leak which turned out to be where something/someone has caught the gearbox casing where the diff housing joins onto the casing, it's more the diff housing so luckily I have a spare diff housing from my old Mini to change it at some point but for now I put a very small amount of RTV until I get round to changing it which seems to have cured it temporarily & thinking of putting 7.5 S brakes up front when we do the diff housing, other than that it's all going well so far😁 took it out this morning & found somewhere to stop for a few updated pics, the D1s are still on but not for much longer I'm hoping to do that before the L2B.

1st runout in 18 months yesterday..... didn't break down so all is good lol.
Newly installed oil pressure gauge sensor doesn't seem totally compatible with the existing gauge, reads near enough 80psi most of the time so I'll swap the gauge out for the one that came with the sensor

In the past week, its been brought out of winter hibernation, and has been started to be used.  I had it MOTd and serviced before putting it away for the winter, which has turned out to be a good idea.

A commute to work on Friday was fun - but it was a frosty start with a frozen windscreen, which I don't think I've done in a Mini for many years.  The heater soon got going though.  The roads are horrific around here just now, which spoils the fun a bit, and you end up staring at the road surface instead of looking further ahead.  Some of the most fun roads are simply no-go, due to the incredibly rough surfaces.  The very same roads that I enjoyed as a youngster in minis in the 90s.

All good so far, although as usual I feel like the car has shrunk.... a combination of other cars getting much larger, at the same time as I've unfortunately got larger... !

There's a great big long to-do list in my head, but its all things that aren't essential to just getting out and enjoying it for a while.
