Model: Mini 40
Year: 1999
Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible):

Hi all,

Finally took the plunge and have acquired a Mini as my first car - lovely little Island Blue Mini 40.

Unfortunately, last night, my friend managed to get my glovebox stuck, and then proceeded to pop the door back in on itself behind the latch. Having finally got it open today, it appears he's managed to snap off the latch and take some of the plastic away that its bolted into at the top of the glove box.

Likewise, the little white bit of plastic on the door that the latch clips 'behind' has snapped in the process >_<

I'm after some advice at where I can find a replacement latch and clip. Also, what am I supposed to do about the 'roof' of the glove box, now it has a whole in it where the latch was snapped off - are these fairly easy to remove and replace? I assume i'd need a whole new compartment here...

Thanks

Any non-standard parts that might be involved with the problem? Not afaik!

The glovebox moulding, latch and striker were all available until recently but I think they are all now NLA sadly.

Welcome to the world of mini's. I must say that te blue mini 40's are one of my favourite models. I think what you may have to do is take the dash off and have a look at the plastic compartment. I'm almost certain they don't sell them seperately. Although you may want to ask a few people on here who specialise in dashboards, they might be able to point you in the right direction. I have heard people talk about replacing them with a plastic container, ie sandwich box, but I'm sure you wouldn't want to do this. I'm sure you are very cheesed off with your mate, I wouldn't be too happy if it was me.

Look under the traders section and see who specialises in dashboards that would be my advice.

Aftermarket dash companies don't use glovebox liners and their dashes aren't compatible with the standard moulding so they are unlikely to know very much about it. The moulding was sold seperately, as all parts are. Unfortunately as I said I don't think there's any stock left anywhere although you could try Somerford Minis. The standard UK spec moulding was part number FFB101120PMA (although there are about 6 other part numbers for other country spec parts and different colours) but the Mini 40 might have used the Special Edition version of the moulding, the latch was FNC100040 and the keeper was FDO105060

Hello all

Thank you for coming back to me so quickly.

I have dropped Somerford Minis and email (what a website!), hopefully they can come up trumps for me.

Then I've got the arduous process of figuring out how to fit the damn thing! Will let you know how it progresses.

Thanks

Toby

Good luck getting it fixed - in the meantime I hope you've given your friend a good kicking (and when/if you get the bits, the bill!) :D

They are easy to fit, they just screw to the back of the dash. The dash is only held in to your car with three fixings at the bottom edge, reached through the air vent and stereo openings after these are removed. The top edge is held with ratcheting clamps that release as you pull the lower edge out.

Correct me if I'm wrong but can you not just use the readily avaliable caravan mini-latches. They look the same as the OEM stuff.
Google "Mini latch" there are literally millions
