They're supposed to be used with sock fileters, with the hif44 a ram stack which goes inside the cone filter can be used, like this one:

Its fine for the engine providing its not used for rallying or anything and used in the correct conditions, filters get used on road cars because of all the crap there exposed to, race mini's use only the ram pipes.Generally people use a ram pipe with a sock filter. Some people use nothing or a piece of gauze but this is not good for the engine at all.
