Bah!

I really want to get my gauges sorted as their driving me insane already!

1) mid 70s (post 75 i would guess) 1275 GT clock, 1990 mini speedo cable... yes/no? Will it work or does this mean that i have to bend my arm in impossible ways to change the speedo cable for one from an old clubby?

2) Am I right in assuming ALL tachometers need the following wires?

- Ground
- Negative side of coil
- 12v + live
(- 12v + for light bulb)

Speedo cable at a guess it should be OK

Wiring to the tacho

According to the factory workshop manual that should be to the positive side of the coil

Positive? :S

I'm all confused now

I thought all tachos worked the same way, and i downloaded a manual for some aftermarket one, and it said the above 4 wires...

Thats what is says here and I checked it with another manual just to be sure. remember there are at least 2 ways of sending an impluse to a tacho.

Have you tried compressing it (zip).

3700 should go in about an hour on dialup

Im not sure about the speedo cable, I have an old center speedo, the attatchment on the back is for a screw type, but the cable on my mini has a white clip instead of the screw.
I know what you mean about that bloody speedo cable, I had my arm down there for about half an hour trying to get that stupid thing off, then I gave up.

Stupid haynes again.

After examining the locking mechanism on the white clip, i figured out a way to get the speedo of painlessly.

Haynes says to squeeze the white clip.

What you really have to do is push it DOWN from the top, while not touching the bottom part of it. If you squeeze it from both top and bottom you are effectively cancelling out any attempt to get it off :)
