For those running 10W40 oil - what type are you using? The engine is a freshly rebuilt 1330, kent 276, big valve head etc.

I generally use Comma oil, as I buy it in BIG tubs...

But any brand mineral should be good for the job, eg the Halfords stuff which comes in the orange plastic bottles.

I seem to be only able to find 10W40 in semi-synthetic eg. Halfords own brand and Mobil. Would this be ok?

Has the engine been run in Ouster?

Nope, hasn't been run in yet. My engine builder (who clearly knows his stuff) said to use a good quality expensive oil and change it after 500 miles are so - which differs from the advice I've read on here!

I had a quick look in Halfords yesterday when buying some paint and noticed that all the 10w40 was semi synthetic too.

Use a branded oil and change it every 5-6 months or 5000-7000 miles.
Bel Ray oil is really really good.

Mineral, semi-synth, anything that won't ruin my seals! If i can find mineral should I get that?

Roe engineering in Fleet, Hampshire built it. Proper old machine shop - no computers in there!

To run in, you need an oil which DOES NOT have the protective agents in it like most 'brand' engine oils do... You can buy specific running in engine oils, and I would change it after 50 miles not 500...

How you run an engine in is your preference, some moly coddle the engine for x thousand miles, some ( like me ) run it hard for 50 miles or so working on the principle that the rings are bedded in within a few minutes of the engine first starting, and a good 50 hard miles on the engine will have knokced all the corners off, if it aint broke by then it's unlikely to break.
