Heyy, been driving my mini a year now with its 998 and stage one kit. I have built a 1310 engine with 285 piper cam, twin carbs, mg big valve head and other goodies... but my question is whats a mini with 80-90bhp like to drive? it may sound like a stupid question but all i have driven on the road is mine and eagerly awaiting putting my new engine in, just wondered what everyones oppinions and experience is like with an engine producing that sort of power, not that its important but what sort of 0-60 times do they produce?, for the money spent i suppose 80-90 isnt rle that much but then when i think about the weight and i think my current engine is fairly nippy just don't know what to expect, any oppinions appriciated
cheers gazz

My bog standard 1275 was 54hp fly 42hp at wheels, chucked on a stage 3 kit and it hit 70hp fly 56hp at wheels, got roller printouts for both aswell.

I was optimistic about whether an extra 16hp was worth the extra money for the kit and whether I would notice such a small silly amount of extra power.

I was wrong, very wrong :bah: was a huge grin factor leaving the rolling road and did make me wonder what 100hp in a mini must be like if I was like this with only 70?

That's what i wanted to hear, have wondered whether it would be enough, somehow 80bhp doesnt sound alot when you look at other cars on the road but im hoping it won't dissapoint

I had 88.8 hp at the fly before I ripped it out to turbo it, and I loved it. Surprised loads of bigger cars, especially around the country lanes!
You'll love it going from a 998

It was a 1293, with a kent 276 cam, morspeed stage 4 'Trackday' head, 1.5:1 roller rockers, HIF44 carb, k&N, LCB, 2" straight through exhaust, straight cut drops and a 3.1:1 FD.

Yes it does get expensive but worthwhile in the end!

Look at it this was... i have 90bhp in my scirocco.. (not even that as it needs tuning) and that leaves a *wow this moves much quicker* grin on my face. (had a 998 previously) So... i'd say quite an improvement as its at LEAST 200kg lighter probably closr to 300kg lighter.

I'm aiming for a reliable (ish) 100bhp from the turbo im planning for the next project. Good luck dude, very much doubt it'll dissapoint! :)

i have a 1293 with Hiff 44 and stage 2 head and its a great drive. not sure what power it is putting out, guessing 60-70 BHP, but am thinking about upgrading to big valve head and 276/286 cam or go to 1380 as well. Depends on budget once i get my bodywork restored.

Prawns taken me out in his car before. That things produces about 100bhp. It scared the jeebas out of me. I'v been in some fast car before my mates dad got a m5 that goes like the clappers. But when you have 100bhp in something so small and light it is just insane and gives you a real idea of what fast feels like.

Just remember you need to stop as well though so some good brakes may be worth buying.

Huey's 1380 registered 87bhp on a rolling road and on 13s in a straight line, he just, well, never went in a straight line exactly. You had to follow where his front wheels led, if you see what I mean. They always went the right way in the end. I was driven in him much faster by a better driver than me and it was even more brilliant. The brakes were excellent and somehow under braking he always sobered up and behaved himself.

Now he will have the same engine and undercarriage (solid front subframe mounts, adjustable everything) on 4.5" 10s with higher profile rubber and smaller brakes so I can't wait to see what happens.

Mrs T's 1275 Sportspack Cooper on similar 13s is quite different. Not that I'm allowed to drive it. Yet. :)
