Model:studio 2 998
Year:1980
Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible):

Went for my MOT last week and had to get my engine adjusted for emissions so asked them to tune it as well (brought it to mini specialist). It was fine until Friday morning when I went to go to work it made a very weird knocking noise when accelerating. Noise is not there when idling or standing or when I rev the engine when standing. Its weird but its just on accelerating when I reach the desired speed and hold it there it stops or if I pull out the choke when driving it stops. Have checked all the engine mounts and steady’s and they are all fine. Had one or 2 people listen to it and they think it could be weird timing too much advance. Anyone got any other ideas.
Could it be running too lean or a carb / ignition problem or does it sound worse like mechanical. Advice please.

Thanks

There is some vibration there. I have looked but cant see anything.

You sure it could be that.I have not opened the hood since the garage tuned it till now.

Thanks

Have checked all wheel bearings and ball joints are all good and only replaced them 6 months ago. All mounts are good as well. Its weird when I accelerate it sounds like a disel engine and vibrates.

If it's a tinkling/pinging sound - then it is pre-ignition (or 'pinking') caused by ignition too far advanced. If its'a rattling noise from the engine - could be knackered big ends. What's the oil pressure like ? Of course - it could just be the exhaust banging against the floor - or a broken mount at the rear of the front subby! Or the floor cracked where the mount fixes to it. Lift the carpet and examine the floor carefully.

The big ends - on the ends of the con-rods, little ends are in the pistons, the big ends whirl round with the crank!

Sorry I know this is an old topic, but I'm having a similar problem, what was the solution to the sound?
