Im thinking of swapping my standard 1.3 mayfair engine for an engine out of an MG F. its a 1.8 vvt K series engine and im wondering how easy this would be to do and if the subframe form the MGF would come in handy at any point i.e would it be able to go under the engine in the mini or would it have to be a custom subframe?

Rover Mini Mayfair 1.3
MG F 1.8vvt K-series Engine

Cheers for any help

I've seen one done, but it was a very big job and needed a special sub-frame and loads of body welding and extra support structure. There are non-Mini engines which fit more easily.
If you have really extensive workshop access and good welding and fabrication facilities, then have a go.

I completely disagree with the two above posts.

Its a very light engine that can produce good power.

Iv got one in my clubman estate, i modified a mini subframe and it was alot of cutting and welding but it can be made to fit.

Iv been in alot and owned of high powered a-series minis and its just in a different league.

How can you say that engine is crap? If the headgasket is done propley with the decent FAI gasket (or a MLS with new bolt rail) and new stretch bolts it will be as good as any other engine, You cant just say a engine is 'crap' because of that.
Even the 1.1 8V is a great little engine let alone a 1.8cc with VVC.

Some people just don't know what there talking about an should just not answer questions on things they don't know diddly squat about!

Brilliant engine very light and good power compared to some of it's rivels! I've the 160vvc in mines.

its a good engine, look at 16v mini club for some other advice as its been done before,
dont listen to people saying its unreliable, its as reliable as the person that owns it,

Have you read the bright pink writing at the top of these pages? have you built a 1.8vvc conversion or even been in a car thats been converted?? are you aware of the newer, improved design head gaskets that are available for the k series engine??

Judging by your post, I dont think so!! Of course you are entitled to your opinion, but "it's crap" isnt a technical answer really is it??

I once went out in a friends metro that had this conversion, the power from a completely standard 1.8 vvc in a lightweight car is pretty impressive. If I was going to do a non a-series conversion, this would be it.

Have a a look here for more info - http://www.theminifo...p?showforum=165

Thats exactly what i've seen in the early lotus elise equipped with k series engine. I'd change the water pump also for an upgraded one..
For the rest the k series 1.8 is a GREAT engine suitable in all kind of uses, from road/traffic use to spiritated trackday use.
