Hello

Simple question i think:

What paint can i use on the engine block?

I would like to use hammerite in order to protect against rust, but i dont think it can stand the temperatures..

I bought some "very high temperature" paint from my local car place, but i dont know if this will last very long.

Any help appreciated

P.s i have cleaned and wire brushed the engine block so its all lovely and shiny.

Hammerite will, like you said, burn off.
I used a small tin of engine laquer from a local shop. I don't know how well the spray will last on a block, but Ive used it on my karts exhaust and it lasted fairly well but did start to burn off. You may get away with it as the block doesn't get anywhere near as hot as the exhaust it was on!!

I used smooth hammerite on my cylinder head, it's been on there at least a year now and no signs of damage caused by the heat. I suppose ideally you'd use engine enamel, Moss sell it, and lots of other places.

A lot of people i've ever spoke to about this have said hammerite is fine. I think hammerite is good for 150 degrees or something like that. And if your engine is getting past 100 degrees, the paint isn't going to be your biggest worry.

there was a thread recently about blue engines, and someone posted a picture of a block painted with blue hammerite, it had been in the car for five years and overheated a couple of times, and the paint was still fine.

Nothing wrong with hammerite

Been using it for years...

It's all down to prep, if the block is not clean and grease free then no matter what paint you use it will come off...

As for temperature, how hot do you think your engine gets.... ???

anything more than 100 degrees then your engine is overheating anyway so high temp paint is just a waste of money.

PS... that was my engine mentioned above...

Do you take it back to metal or just to a clean, grease and flake free surface?
I'm presuming the latter?

Back to metal when possible.....

basically I dip the blocks... however if the engine is not coming apart then it's out with the nitromores...

Oh, right. I guess that gives the bores a good chemical clean inside too, so bonus there?

I used white spirit and a wire brush in a drill for mine! The old yellow paint and rust just flaked off!
