And it's sadly time to say goodbye to the beautiful red paint under the bonnet.

I bought last year the aluminium door handle kit, but as I have the earlier type horizontal pull handle, the new one was too long, as it's meant for the later diagonal type. So I made my own little design starting with a aluminium flat bar.

Here is a comparison between the original plastic handle, the new one from the kit and mine

I don't think it looks too bad

I'd be interested to know if you notice any decrease in sound level from this? I'm considering something similar.

I will tell once I get the car out in April

So I got the Mini out when it was warmer. I did the timing and carb adjustements and it went well. It even did a 250km run the next day without problem.
On another small shopping errand, a sizeable steel beam appeared on the middle of the road, from under the traffic and I couldn't avoid it and it hit hard on the sump... I got back home ASAP and got the Mini on jack stands to inspect the damages...
First thing, it could have been so much worse. It could have teared the brake like, fuel line, gearshift mechanism but only the sump was hit, the exhaust muffler and a couple of scratches under the floor. The exhaust shifted back 2cm.
I ordered a sump guard and will install as soon as I get it. It might not be able to take another hit like that...

Ouch! that was lucky that more damage wasn't caused.

Ouch, not nice...
But on the plus side, it seems you only got the cooling ribs broken and not the casing itself...
I know aluminium can also be welded, would it be a job to be done during the next oil change maxbe?
(thinking of getting a sumpguard once the engine will be one day in the car...)
Anyway, great thing that you could manage your to-do list during the winter and drive it again!

Was there a noticeable diffence in the noise level from the bonnet soundproofing?

Yes it is noticeably quieter, I now hear more of the tires rolling on the road, that must mean that I hear less of the engine. At 85kmh+ it's still a noisy car though

So here is the newly found protection. I found it on ebay, is expensive and weights nothing. Now the car sits even lower but it's for a good cause.

Looks great!
Did you have to drill the holes in the subframe to mount the sump guard?
Now you finally have a badge on the front of the car, albeit not on the bonnet ;)
