Simply remove the top arm, I have done it dozens of times. It can be done very easily, 10mins each side

Just reread the thread. Using a cut down cone to alter the ride height is not dangerous as previously stated

Thanks for the replies guys.

So basically it is possible then? (contrary to what many people seem to think)

What I find remarkable is that no one in your area has offered you the use of their compressor.I made mine only last week and you are welcome to it's use after this weekend when I am fitting hi los. Prob is the postage will cost more than it's worth! Cost about£4 to make. Any one round here is welcome to borrow it. I used M14 stud as that is what my cones are but a length or 1/2" UNF stud would be negligable cost if you need that thread. Good luck with the job,TobyOOPS quick edit meant M14

Its easy mate,
Remove radiator for ease.
Jack up car, put on axle stands.
Remove the rebound buffer from under the top arm.
Split top ball joint.
Undo and remove the 2 1/4"unf bolts from the top arm front mounting plate.
Undo and remove the 2 1/2" unf nuts on the top arm shaft.
Extract the shaft.
Remove the top arm.
Remove the alloy cone.
Remove the rubber do'nut.
The alloy cone and do'nut are usually stuck together with rust, WD40 usually helps them.

Do opposite to refit

On a slightly different slant, with Hi-Los can you set the ride height higher than standard or is it just to lower the car?

I use them to raise my rally cars for extra ground clearance.

I use the good old washers to raise the car, but hi.los allow you to replace cones quickly, no hassle with trumpets sagged into the cones.
Raising/lowering ratio is 1:3 at the front and 1:5 at the back.

I have managed to remove an old cone and trumpet without using a compression tool but could not fit the new cone as it was impeded by the top arm.

I wish someone could teach me how to remove the top arm in 10 mins- I have honestly found it to be the most frustrating job yet and I am still nurse the cuts to my hands and fingers from doing 10 days ago! I have done this job numerous times and about the only thing that I have found that made it easier was not having a brake servo fitted on my new mini!

The correct tool is not expensive and is easier and quicker to use than trying to do it without.
Get the correct tools and make the job easy.
As Toby says, you can make a tool for a few quid.

Right, as pathetic as it sounds, i've only got round to attempting this today due to other things happening to the mini....i decided to leave it at standard height for a while.

But the time has come and i'm a little confused....this is where i'm at so far:

Can anyone tell me what's next? I can't seem to get the pin out...? How do i extract it exactly because i can't knock it out with a hammer due to lack of room?

I'm trying to get this all sorted so that hopefully i can get a guide sticky'd on here for others people to use ;)

Get the nut off from between the subby and bulkhead, undo and remove the two 1/4"unf bolts holding the plate on the front of the subby tower.
The pin will then slide out the front of the tower easily
