Yes the wires coming from the floor near the gear level would be for the rear brake lights.

you will need to check using a wiring diagram in the haynes

Has the reverse light worked in the past?
Mounted on the side of the gear leaver housing is the reverse light switch which has two wires comming from it (can't remember what colour the wires are though) If you remove your gear gaitor you may be able to see the wires going to the switch. just check to see if any wires are attached to this switch and trace them back to two bullet connectors joining the switch to the wiring loom. The haynes manual would tell you the colours of the wires to this switch.
Hope this helps

Yep should plug into two wires dangling down fom behind the dash although if you carpet is still in then they will be under the carpet.

I had a problem where my reverse lights would work if I held the gear lever in reverse gear. But as soon as I let go they would go off. Finally figured out myself after taking it to many auto electricians and spending a fair penny or two on repleacemnt switches, that the switch was not screwed in tight enough. Sorted that and it worked fine, might be an idea to check that. Dont screw it in to tight as for some reason when I did this I found i could not put it in 2nd gear.
Just a thought but I may be completely wrong.
