Normally they are fitted on the r/h side, some cars have them on both sides and i'm sure i have seen them fitted in the middle.

I have found this info for you from this web site. http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_110.htm

The inspection of rear fog lamps is confined to the one rear fog lamp which is required to be fitted to the centre or offside of
vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1980.
Note: On some vehicles the front fog lamps need to be switched on before the rear fog lamp(s) will work
.
Note: A rear fog lamp is permitted to operate independently of headlamp, position lamp or ignition systems.

Note: at least 50% of light sources in a lamp must illuminate

6. With dipped headlamps and the ignition switched on, operate the rear fog lamp switch and check that a rear fog lamp
. is fitted to the centre or offside of the vehicle

. is working, and

. does not flicker when tapped lightly by hand.

Check also that the drivers tell-tale works properly.

7. Check the presence, condition, security and operation of the switch.
6. A mandatory rear fog lamp
a. is missing, does not emit a steady red light or emits a light other than red
b. incomplete, not in good working order or not visible from a reasonable distance
c. is insecure, obscured or not facing to
the rear
d. flickers when tapped lightly by hand e. tell-tale does not work
f. adversely affected by the operation of
any other lamp.
7. A rear fog lamp switch
a. missing
b. faulty
c. insecure
d. not able to be operated from the normal driving position.

I think this covers what you need.

Ive fitted a 206 fog light in the centre and it went through the MOT ok.

I think it has to be at least 25cm from the ground and it has to be a certain distance from the brake light.

The information is on the forum some where.

dont quote me on this, but i hought they had to be fitted to the RHS.
Though ones that are in the middle are actually a couple of mm to the right, so you can get away with it.

MX5 city used to fit the fog lights to jap imports, a couple of mm off the centre line.

Loads of modern cars have the fog in the middle......The 205 as already stated, the new TT and even the new BMW Mini.

So it must be ok

Must be 10cm from any brake light, but as you quite rightly say, can be fitted to centre or o/s of vehicle...

Having it in the middle removes the necessity to have a different location for LHD and RHD... QED

Details are in the FAQ's

unfortunately it's so old the picture has gone !!!

Can we have some pictures please?! I was planning on doing exactly the same thing ( have even got the same lamp unit) although mine will be offside due to my centre exit exhaust.

I think the best way to check is to sit your Mini on a road. Walk back the distance a car would be following you at and see if you can see the lamp. I'm sure you'll be fine as long as it's not tucked up tight under the bumper.

The standard fitting under the rear bumper on the RHS is a real rust-trap and the main cause of rear valences needing changing. It's easy to make up a braket and fit the light onto the bootlid.

how about if you made the reverse light in the cluster the fog light and then switched the indicator and bake light?
This means its 100mm away so would this solve the problems? would it not?
Not sure of legality?
so brake
indicator
then fog

Just an idea.

Cheers, looks good :(

Is that just screwed straight to the valance then? Does it point down at the ground?
