Hi hopefully someone can help me out.

I have just sprayed my rollcage with black hammerite tonight but I have noticed a few runs. I think this is due to the cage being stone cold when I painted it.

I will obviously have to wait a few days until it is rock hard but can the runs be flatted back with wet and dry just like any other paint. I have some 1200 grit paper kicking around so hopefully this will do. Alternatively I will give the runs a rub down with a rougher grit and respray where needed.

Any advice will be really appreciated.

Cheers

Either way if you want to get rid of the runs you'll need to repaint it.

Like you say best to let the paint harden first, if you can get it in the house it'll harden up quicker.

Then i'd use something like 600 grit to flat the runs out and repaint where nessessary. With paint like hammerite 1200 will just clog up and give you a hard time.

Thanks Mike

So i will defo need to repaint. A flat down with a fine grit wet and dry will not be ok on its own (in the same way as you would to 2pack) then.

 :w00t: What a plank.

if you can get it in the house it'll harden up quicker.

Dont think the wife will be too happy with that LOL

You will probably have to wait a few days before you can sand hammerite properly. It takes ages to set when its cold.

Also, the runs are there because you put too much paint on. Not because the metal was too cold.

Thanks, I have moved the cage inside for the next couple of days and will wait for it to fully harden before sanding the runs down. I had a look when i got home from work and the runs are a lot better than i first thought.

Also, the runs are there because you put too much paint on. Not because the metal was too cold.

I would normally agree, but the coat i applied was very thin (so thin that you can still see the primer) I think it may have been a mixture of the cold metal and the fact that the spray can had also been left in the garage. The coverage from the can does not seem very good at all, almost as if the paint and thinners are still seperated even after more than enough shaking. I have never had any problems with spraying previously (I am no expert thought :tumble: )

Well you live and learn.

Dan,

Next time you spray with a can... Boil a kettle first, put the boiling water in a bucket (or similar). Put your spray can in the hot water, either hold it or put a brick on top of it and leave it in the hot water for a good 5-10mins... then spray.

You'll find that you get a far far superior finish as you'll get a finer spray pattern.

Let us know how it goes after you try it.

Cheers Ed

Sounds like a great idea. I also think i will leave the other sections of the cage inside for a few hours or so before painting just to bring them up to room temprature.

Thanks again

Thanks Agian for the pointers guys.

I finished spraying the cage over the weekend and i am really pleased with the results. Leaving the can in warm water seemed to help a bit as well as leaving the cage in the sun for an hour or so before painting.

A few pictures below as requested by Mark. :-
