My mini has quite a lot of corrosion in the rain gutter, and around the edge of the roof. In places, there are biggish holes, eg above the top of the A-frame.
Am wondering what's involved in patching up the roof in these places, and also repairing the lip itself. Looks tricky to weld here.

No responses - is this an unusual repair ? Surely someone has done it before.

Hi Jerry,

Yes it's possible to repair the gutters... it just takes some time and patience. Take a look at my project thread here. I explained how I repaired my gutters. If you need to repair sections of gutter any larger than what I was repairing I'd highly recommend making up tiny repair panels and then welding them in instead of building the areas up with weld like I did.

More pictures here.

With regards to repairing corners of the roof... this is a difficult one. You'd have to repair the roof before the gutters as you'd probably need to cut sections of the gutter away to gain decent access. Once you have access, you can then cut away the bad area of roof and weld in a repair section. Making up a suitably shaped repair section wouldn't be easy but it is of course possible with enough time and effort.

Once section of roof has been repaired you can then weld in the section of gutter that you cut out.

It's highly detailed work! The kind of thing that I dread but actually get quite into after I make a start!

I've never done repairs on these sections before but i think i would be inclined to find a scrapper and cut out the sections you need. The contours down the sides would be quite easy to fabricate but as for the lips you would need to cut these from the scrapper.

Not much help i'm afraid the only other thing i can suggest is have a look at SCPARTS chp 15.7 item 19 as they do drip rails.

this is the route i took, i have got damage to front corners of the roof and also door frame but yet to actually start the work here, gonna be very tricky so im building up to it. i'd find someone who has a car they're cutting up and grab what you need, i got both sides of the roof and the door frame etc.. all for about £20, wasnt gonna argue with that as its probably gonna save me huge amounts of work hours

thanks guys, for your advice, I'll take a look. I think the idea of finding a scrapper is a good idea.

I've patched gutters in the past but brazed rather than welded new sections in.

That repair was just a shaped piece of steel welded in.

Quick skim of filler and job done!!
