hey guys

i have a new window screen rubber seal for my car (from minispares) as old 1 is leaking

trouble is i took out the old 1 to fit new 1, but after 45 mins of getting 1 corner in, then the middle in, i couldnt get the other top in.....Grrrrrr
it was so annoying i used some lube and water to help and a platic knife....but couldnt get it to fit

so i put original rubber back in and new chrome filler strip.....as if i spent any longer i would of chucked it in the bush it was doing my nut
>_<

my friend said... original mini window screens are thicker & that i might be better to invest in a new front window screen as there slimmer than old 1's and this should easy alloy me to fit new rubber.....is this true?

i was thinking as my old screen is a little scratchy in places i dont mind investing in a screen as its only £30.00, but if i am going to have same problem then its not worth it

or does anyone have any tips to get new rubber to fit?

Nice title, you try sliding it down the shaft?

Anywho, window rubbers. You don't mention HOW your fitting it. I used a load of soapy water and a cake icing tool to get my screen rubber in.

cheers guys....thought title might amuse your childlike minds >_<

its the front screen and i put the screen in the rubber 1st, then push it up to the metal lip of car near the roof and work it round with water/lube and plastic knife......done this to back window and went in piece of poo

cant see why it wont work on front?

The best way to do it is put the rubber on the car first then put the screen in and pull the rubber over the screen bit by bit. Is that the way you did it or did you put the rubber on the glass first?

I agree rubber on frame first.
Then put bottom edge of screen into rubber and go round and peel the rubber over.
Plenty of lube.

Did mine the other day new screen, and new screens are pretty thick as well I thought'd I'd been given 2 stuck together at first >_<

Does help if you warm the rubber and the fillet strip up, bucket of hot water.

Get some strong cord and tuck this into the rubber all the way round with the windscreen in it. Make sure you have enough cord at both ends to get a firm grip and preferably with the ends in the lower middle section of the the windscreen rubber and make sure the rubber is well lubricated.

Lower the windscreen and rubber onto the bottom edge of the windscreen aperture and push down gently to make sure it is seated. To make life easier have some help for this bit, ask your assistant to push in gently on the outside top edge while you carefully pull one end of the cord along ensuring the inside rubber lip is pulled over the windscreen aperture.

Continue doing this until you have pulled all of the rubber over the lip and the cord is out. Job done, to make sure its all seated in gently thump on the windscreen on the outside either with a rubber mallet or your hand. Then fit your plastic spreader section.

Hope this makes sense as this is the way i fit all old style rubber mounted windscreens.

Sonikk4's method with the string/rope is the traditional one I have used several times on cars other than Minis. For whatever reason, putting the rubber on the body opening of a Mini, then fitting the glass to it seems to work better.

There is a FAQ about this on our board. Perhaps it will help.

All joking and rude comments aside, "personal lubricant" (akin to your subject title) is an excellent lube for installing the lock strip.

Doug i am suprised at you, there is a correct method for fitting glass using a claytonrite sp. rubber as the rubber is designed to be fitted to the aperture first and the glass then fitted.
the string method is used on the quater glass on a mini but not on the front and rear screens.

im a seal to the body man myself, then pop the windscreen in.

I use a heater (blowing warm air) and leave it slightly ahead of where im working to soften the rubber and make it easier to work with. This is especially good when fitting the fillet strip.
