I for one am very appreciative of this topic.

Reading that a flip front can lead my car to requiring an IVA has inspired me to scrap my flip front idea and just put a regular front end back on instead. Sure, it's not going to be as easy to work on my engine, but I'd rather spend £100 on an engine crane than £400 to get my car kindly placed on a Q plate.

There is no reason we can't abide by these rules and still enjoy tinkering with our Minis, that way, everyone is happy and the roads are safer because the people that these rules are aimed at catching will be caught out and their dangerously modified cars removed from the roads.

Thanks for the heads up Bungle, I did read the other thread but it all seemed alot more theoretical back then, now it seems much more in progress and I don't want to fall foul of it.

Does anyone have a scrap Mini I could have the inner wings off? :-

hmmmm this is a hornets nest, and is going to create massive problems so convetable converstions, boot floor modifications and bulkhead mods, along with flip fronts puts 1/4 of the minis on an iva, with either an age related plate or a Q oh well a tax on modifications, wonder when they will xray welding to see if its up to standard

How hard will it be to put a flip fronted Mini through an IVA?

The way I read into all this is; If any original section of the bodyshell has been altered, then it will be subject to an IVA test. However, it sounds like they might be lenient on some mods they think are acceptable.

I would like to tubb the rear arches, and I remember reading an answer by an official on another thread, it would be ok to do this. The thing is though, unless these exceptions are put in writing on an official document, we would still be at risk of having our cars being called up for an IVA test.

So would this make the answers given to ACE invalid?

I think there's a thread in the Zcars section about how to pass an IVA test.

Then I'll do it! :- Carbon Weezel Flip Front, here I come. Glad I have some super brace bars from MRA Minis on the way! :w00t:

Will the whole car need to go through the test? Or do they just test the modified part?

They would barely look at the modified part, and not in a manner that wouldn't be equally applicable to what was there before. Have a look in the IVA manual, you'll see the bulk of the test is about complying with light regulations, checking other bits have the right marking etc and there are no sharp edges - dimensional rather than structural.

Something like fitting different seats, a steering wheel, ICE, driving lights, wheels, spoilers etc would actually be more relevant to what they check.

VOSA need to stick their neck out for once and make it clear what is classed as a modification to the shell. Presumably oversills fall foul, and if you patch a floor that must count, fitting a sunroof must be a big no-no... where does it stop? As someone said, drill a hole in the wrong place and it would be eligible. Perhaps the wings are slightly structural because it supports the front subby slightly?

you will also have to fit an alarm to pass the test!

if you do plenty of googling with iva and vosa you will find loads of scary things

Well I have decided that I am just going to do what I want to the car. I mean how does this IVA nonsense start in the first place? Who recommends your car to go through an IVA? Is it the MOT man? If so than that is fine as I have a VERY Mini friendly MOT man that owns a specialist Mini garage. He already told me he'd write me up an "Engineers Letter" should I need it. He understands that alot of his "Mini related customers" are US Military and that nearly all of them are planning on taking their Minis back to the states with them. Awhile back when I was planning on stuffing Freck with a C20XE I asked him about the SVA test and he said "Don't worry about it, just figure out what you want to do to the Mini and we'll make it right".

Once Dexter is done the only things DVLA will be informed about is his color change and the 1275 I am swapping in. Everything else is my business and I'll be glad when I can get him home where none of this stuff exists. It can be very stressful dealing with all these regs. I don't know how you guys do it! A huge example is TV tax.....how do you guys pay this and not be angry about it!?
