Is an IVA test that bad? i mean, it will at least make sure these modifications are safe for the road? (assuming the testers will be fair and wont right off all modifications.)

Actually they don't test the modifications as such - they make sure there are no sharp edges and stuff like 'protective steering' but in theory you could go in with a V8 monster producing 500bhp and as long as the drum brakes all round meet the performance requirements for the vehicle weight it should pass!

It's about making modified vehicles safe.

See above!

clicky for mr drives the thing

That page has been updated fairly recently - it never used to say anything about the monocoque, just colour and engine!

If you fail the IVA you get put on Q plates by the sounds of it

If you fail the IVA your car can't be registered at all so NO plates. If it passes the IVA, it can be given EITHER an age related plate if it is deemed by DVLA that enough of the car is original but not original enough to retain it's old reg OR a Q-plate. If the car was tax exempt it will no longer be even if it's given an age related plate from '72 or earlier.

This is what I am worried about....if I (for some dumb reason) had to take my Mini through an IVA test and subsequently got pushed onto a Q plate then I might as well sell the car and step away from Minis altogether. A Q plate would screw me out of the 25 year old or older import rule. In reality the Mini would be 30 years old by the time we PCS from here but if it got a Q plate then US Customs would give it a no go as the "paperwork" side of things would show it no longer being old enough to import into the united states.

For me this is critical....if one of you guys gets a Q plate you still get to keep your Mini! If I get one then it's no Mini for me! Man! The EU comes up with some strange rules and regulations!

A weber box won't automatically mean its going to need an IVA, its going to go off how much your car has been changed from original spec.

Its suppose to work off a points system: http://www.theminifo...howtopic=131387

if you fail an IVA test your mini doesn't go on the road

if you pass an IVA test the DVLA will give you a new reg number that will start with a Q

you would be best not to modify the car beyond the 8 points needed to keep your reg

i'm no expert on any of this but if you read all the links you start to get the picture

if anyone has any questions about their car and are worried they won't keeps it's identity you can ask questions on ACE and they will do their best to answer them for you

Unfortunately that is not totally correct.

IF a weber box is seen as a modified monocoque then you automatically loose the 5 points for the body, and the 8 points you require HAS TO INCLUDE the 5 points for an unmodified body/chassis.

Basically, regardless of how many other points you get IF the bodyshell is modified then it's IVA territory.

right wowow im so confused where it comes to changing engine size. When I bought my car it had a metro 1275 in it, but on the logbook it was down as a 998. I am obviously going to be changing this but im confused as to what the DVLA will ask me for as proof as i dont have a receipt for it or i dont think it was done in a garage etc. I have no idea where the engine came from and who fitted it. Anyone able to point me in the right direction??

Just ask your friendly MOT garage to check the engine and write you a letter (on headed paper) confirming the engine size. That should be fine to keep DVLA happy.

I was in the same boat with the same engine swap. Lucky for me the garage where my family takes the cars for their mots, said tell us what you want and we will have somebody type it up on headed paper for you. I went to my local DVLA office and that was enough to get my tax and have the V5 changed. I would say find out what the letter has to say and then ask a garage to do you a letter on headed paper.
