The problem here could be allowing them to set a precedent that they will then need to defend. You need to make every possible objection to any decision you get involved with. In some ways the DVLA are at the mercy of the regulations too, parliament made them, they are in the unfortunate position of having to enforce them. Which means they first have to decide what they actually mean. It could be worth digging up anything related in Hansard to get a flavour of what the gist of the debate and act were about. I very much doubt if focused on the intricacies of restoring cars and was rather more about dodgy write offs and stolen cars, as well as keeping the kitcar industry going.

Maybe we should be looking more at "advising" them how best to apply this to our Mini's like pointing out that removing the front portion of the inner wing when fitting a flip front etc. isn't going to make the slightest bit of difference as to whether it's still a Mini or not paperwork wise and advising what should and more importantly shouldn't be classed as part of the monocoque.

We, at ACE would love to be at that stage, however, there are 5 people doing the work over here.
All of which are volunteers with day jobs.
The maunfacturers and the 'industry' don't seem to be particularly bothered about lending any 'weight' to things so, at this point we are focussing on clarifying the rules before thought is given to advising where they should be ammended.
We need to get a baseline established first.
Or more volunteers... >_<

Bungle, it's well past midday, does that mean you........

i had a chat with someone the other day who did not believe it was gonna be an issue, well its gonna be, and evan if its a pre 76 car on a twin bolt subframe the inner wings are part of the structure as the front subframe mounts to these via the front panel. Also i was informed the firbeglass fronts are illegal for road use, they are track/race use only.

I heard that DVLA/VOSA are going to clamp down on oversize wheels etc as it can effect braking, bump steer, torque steer etc and in some cases make the car unsafe and unfit for road use.

In the case of the mini they say that mini's are not designed for 13x7 wheels or wider and the subframes over time will weaken and then the inner wings will crack (I have seen this happen) Causing minis to wander all over the road and become unsafe for use.

All minis when you go for an mot after 2012 will have to have fitted the original type/weight/size of wheel that it left the factory with.
If you wish to fit larger wheels you will have to beef up the subframe and have your car IVA tested.

They were really fair to be honest and only asked that I change my flux capacitor before being used for inter stellar time travel and it was a touch low on tread.

The car is now on a z plate as they have currently run out of Q plates due to the clamp down on VW based cars in Southampton.

I think this guy is on a wind up, Most sportspack minis were built on 13 x 7 wheels were they not?

And just to add, the guy at the MOT station I was at on Saturday knew nothing about any of this! And he knows minis!

The wider wheel law is real though mate. Just check out the 2012 laws on the DVLA site.

They are rolling this out for all cars fitted with ESP too. This is not just a windup, its a fact. Sorry
