Hi Guys.

I dont suppose you could give me a rough estimate for welding in a complete floor, you know the heritage panel with the whole floor pan, cross member, inner and outer sills and healboard all in one assembly?

Also I need new door step panels, a-panels, hing panels, boot floor repairs, rear arch repairs / tubbing and repair sections to the scuttle corners

The bootlid and doors are all good and the front end is carbon fiber. is it worth me repairing this shell with so much rust or would it be better to break it for spairs and start again? I know it needs about £800+ worth of panels but its the welding cost that I dont know. its a 1990 rover cooper by the way which I have owned for 10 years so it has a sentimental value to me.

Cheers for any advice
Neil.

I think youre in the £2200 - £2500 region - plus final prep and paint on top.

cheapest option is buy your self a welder and learn to weld

the welder isn't expensive and it won't take long to learn, and with it being the under side it doesn't matter if your not the neatest of welders

if your going to stay in the classic car scene it's something you need to know how to do, unless you have your own bank note printing machine

Thing is I already own a welder... have done for 10 years. I have even done a college course on welding at night school so my welding (on the bench) is pretty good. I just dont have the time or space to do this. looks like its not far off the cost of a new shell unless I do the work myself.

What would a new shell cost (inc doors / bonnet / boot) painted? I know they are about £3800 + VAT un painted.

Cheers
Neil.

for a bare shell painted inside and out you could probably add another 2k

Unless you have the time/space/skills to do a job of that scale yourself, it's almost always going to be uneconomical getting it repaired professionally, unless the car is something rare or special. You're looking at at least £2500 to do all that metalwork and get it ready for paint, a good paint job will cost you £1500+, so you're already at £4000.. It's makes more sence to get a new shell, and then you won't be finding other rust occurring in the near future, so long as it's done right and waxoyled.

Cost me about £650 for mostly genuine parts and the labour to change the floor on mine last year...
Posted Image
Although the labour was about 1/3 off (mates rates) and I had stripped the shell down prior to the job and I also went back and prepped the edges after the old floor had been removed.

It's a clubby estate though so there is the extension panel to weld in also.
if the rest of the car is not bad enough to need re-shelling it may be worth getting some quotes, and the more you can do yourself the cheaper it becomes...

Looks like I will have to find the time to do this myself then.

Cheers for your help guys.

Neil.
