Simple question, i'm getting a fair bit of judder under heavy braking. Its a perfectly standard 88 city E, and the juddering stops when the brakes are released. Have checked the bearings for movement and they seem fine. Any ideas?

Could it be the ABS kicking in? :P

Cheers, Dan

First thing to check is your wheel nuts. If they're loose they'll let the wheel wobble under braking force.

it should have 8.4" brake discs fitted - if so theres a chance they might be warpped.

classic minis dont have abs :0)

Check for play in the ball joints, I had to re-shim mine to stop it but you might get away with a good greasing of the old nipples

Another vote for warped disks...

Easy to check, jack up front of car, remove road wheel and spin, you be able to see the runout on the disk against the caliper

I'm saying warped discs.

I replaced my brakes last weekend after they had warped discs. Annoying I tell you :P

The ABS bit was a joke :)

It does have the 8.4" discs, sorry forgot to mention.

What can cause a disc to warp?

I've replaced them all probably 2000 miles ago (the old ones were VERY worn) so looks good for checking those then. What is the best way to bed new discs in so that they don't warp? (bearing in mind it has to be done legally and in a mini with literally 2 dog powers)

probabley warped disks, i no this sound stupid but check your flange bolts when i was breaking heavy mine done this and was ok when not breaking then after my flange bolts sheered off and the brakes locked up so just a thought.

Drive sensibly, don't do any unnecessary hard braking, and don't ride the brakes...

This is more to get the pads bedded in that the disks...

Sorry to hijack this but as above what can cause warped discs? Could it poss be very very hard braking eg emergency stop from high speed? :)

what discs did you buy?

cheap ones tend to warp more easily.

Well the original poster has standard factory discs, as do I. So the cause? Heat?
