i painted my drums using halfords brake calliper paint, can be brushed or sprayed, comes in a variety of colours, any vht paint will do

just jack the car up, take the wheel off, wirebrush and sand the drum, and mask off the wheel studs, then clean the drum using some brakecleaner, then paint away

you wont affect the braking, as long as you only paint the outside of the drum, the bit you can see through the wheels

my rears are painted in black hammerite but maybe the caliper paints better as its high temp so wont bubble under heat.while your there unscrew the bolts that hold the drum on, whack some copper grease on them and screw them back in to stop them from seizing, nightmare to sort out if they get stuck, same with your brake adjusters, there a pain too!

Hi Dan,

I think painted drums look great!

I did mine last year with high temp paint as its nice and cheap - they looked great but it was a matt finish and not quite what i was looking for.

I would always reccoment using the proper drum and caliper paint - Has a nice shiny gloss effect, and the paint is much thicker.

Just make sure you give them a good going over on the outside with a wire brush, give them a good clean with the solvent cleaner, and mask up the inside to avoid overspray where the shoes touch the drum. Apart from that you cant really go wrong.

good luck.

Marc

Saying that I used Hammerite on my RXS100's downpipe and it surprisingly held up well - apart from stinking for days after it kept heating up/cooling down.

They really do look nice in red!

Now I’ve panted my front 8.4 callipers on the 25 which is a daily (trashed) driver in hammerite and even a few years down the line, I’ve still not had any problems with the paint.

Although a wire brush in a drill or grinder makes short work of cleaning the rust off the drums, callipers or any other rusty item for that matter.

I wire brushed mine (rears) then used 151 red oxide primer then 151 pillar box red metal paint both at a £1 a tin no issues whatsoever
