Hey all, I have finished restoring my MG, and want to take it away for the weekend, for a bit of a sneaky test drive.. the problem is, I can't get temporary insurance for it, as it's group 17. Anyone know of any way of temporarily insuring it for a weekend? I can't add it to my current policy as I'm under 25, and if I take out a full years insurance it'll cost me more to cancel it after the weekend than its worth.. Thoughts welcomed!

My sister managed to get a months insurance on my Fiesta when her Focus went down - she took it out with Endsleigh but she could have probably got it cheaper else where (she wasn't really bothered)

Why is it group 17?! My dad's Fireblade is a group 17 vehicle!

I don't know why it's group 17 :S all I can imagine is it's the age and spec. It's just a standard "72 MGB GT.

Tried them mate, they refused to cover me because of the insurance group.. I even tried a similiar company who have a section dedicated to classic cars, and they declined it too :)

I used them for a weeks insurance earlier this year on a 2 litre volvo estate, so it can't be an age thing..

My '69 MGB GT is no way near a group 17! Well I don't believe it is anyway.

Good luck! (Doesnt your insurance cover you to drive any other vehicle third party? -Could put it in your wife/girl friend/brothers name)

I thought it seemed a bit strange, but two companies told me it was 17. I looked on an insurance group website, and they say the MGB's don't exist :D

One has to be over 25 to drive other cars, I'm 24. My girlfriend is also under 24 and my brother doesn't drive ;)

I think I may have to forget the idea!

Have a look into Footman James (for classic car insurance - although I'm not sure if you have to be over 25 to qualify for that)

I do not think any MG is group 17,thats mens class starting. They will not cover young on temp so ask your dad to temp cover it.You should get covered for a week in a grown ups name for about £100

for this, the car has to be insured, so would still cost a years worth of insurance in someone elses name.

call footman james, get it taken out on a years classic car policy and you have 14 days to cancel the policy, giving you a full refund of the year's premium if cancelled in this time, you have to pay a fee of £15.95 to cancel, but its still 2 weeks insurance for £16 :D

Do an HPi check for £20 or get 3 for £30 - useful if you buy cars on a semi-regular basis - (HPi) and you can get 7 days drive-away insurance from Aviva - you need to phone them with a reference number to get a quote for a full years cover (make sure you're sitting down :D ) and they will send you all the documents by e-mail.

Doesn't matter if you already own the car either - I did one on my old car to get it to the auction legally!

Have a read here for all the details,

JR

Edit: forgot to add that as you are going to be selling the car if the check comes back all clear it's a good selling point!
