Hi yer guys.

I've been having problems with my gear box and its the synchromesh in 2nd gear. Ive been quoted £650 + vat. Is this around about the right price? apparently it requires completely overhauling.

Please help!

If your having someone fit it then yes it's going to cost a wedge, but If you supply them a gearbox it's at least going to reduce it a little.

I can do a refurbished gearbox for 50 quid, this is basically a gearbox rebuilt from good condition used parts, only new bits are seals and gaskets.

The next level is what is called a rebuilt box, which this time uses a lot of new parts, like bearings, shafts, diff pin and most importantly the baulk rings ( these are the things which have failed in yours ). One of these will cost you 200. Added on to that, for an additional 50 notes, you can have what I have called the "trackday pack" which upgrades some of the major wear components which high grade competition ones, and also adds a central oil pick. So for 250 notes, you would have a gearbox which is probably better than the one which it came out of the factory with.

Please note these are standard prices, and are for an exhange gearbox supplied with std ratio gears in either A+ or A series, with a 3.44 final drive. Other ratios and final drives are available at an additional cost...

Basically, take engine out of car, split engine from box byt removing flywheel and transfer case, replace gearbox, refit transfer case, flywheel, and engine to car... Drive off..

The only problem is it'll take you a weekend

To cut a long story short.. (honest)

You can either come and collect a gearbox, and give me one as a replacment there and then. If this is not possible then a surcharge (£30) is applied until a reusable gearbox is returned, at which point you get your £30 back.

The alternative I can send you a gearbox, and then when you've replaced it you can send one back.. again this incurs the 30 pound surcharge, and has the added charge of postage, but it does save travelling around.
