Under the dash you will find a large pink relay. Unplug it and see what that does to the main beam function. The dipped beam shouldn't work at all with it removed. Try this and tell us what happens, it does sound like the stalk is knackered or cross wired though.

Lol, my Mini has a "quirk" involving hazards.... to get them on, you have to put the hazard switch 3/4 down, then flick the indicator switch onto right signalThe hazard lights should work with one press of the switch, like in all cars.

I was going to leave it, because the indicators work fine, as do all the other electrics, and it shows the cars character imo, but if you think it will get worse, i'd better fix it!

back again
Wires-- Blue and white=Main beam
-- Blue and red= dipped
light switched on to head lights,
we have 12 volts at blue/white wire and blue/red wire at both head lights- on dipped position on stalk.
we have 12 volts at the blue/white when on main beam position on stalk, but no power to blue/red wire at both headlights
when we disconnected the large pink relay(light switched on headlights) this knocked out the power to the blue/red wire, but power was maintained to blue/white. this was the same for dipped and main beam.
we have checked all connections, light switch to loom, stalk to loom, ect and all seem correct.
we did try and swap the blue/white and blue/red wires at the stalk, but this resulted in no power at headlights.
thanks:)
please help:P
here is a picture of the wires that are connected up at the stalk.

hi guys:)
well after another few hours, we decided to swap the wires round at the lights themselves, and even though this means now that push away is for dip and towards you is main beam, they now work to perfection:)
only problem is that the blue dash light saying main beam is on on dipped and main beam, which is a small price to pay:)
if anyone has any ideas how to fix it would be great:)
thanks for all the help:)
