I've just got my christmas pay check and I fancy a new carb. But have no real idea of what to get, I've got a 998 engine and will have a stage two kit on order. Also I don't know what carb I have currently.

Please enlighten me. =P

Here's my carb.

That would be HS4, inch and a half in old money, and ok with new needle if you don't want to spend.

The pipe missing off it is for the overflow should the needle valve in the float stick.
Give us the number off the tag and I'll tell you its spec.

So there isn't really any point in upgrading the carb? Just use the new needle which is coming with my stage two kit?

Mini 1000 '82 to '91 needle is AAC
For service items use code FZX3013

And yes, no need to upgrade if you dont want to spend, I've used this carb on tuned motors and it performs well, HIF 38 (Metric size) is a little better but not worth paying a lot out for what you get. If a cheap one available though, why not.

Just that it vents any petrol away from the hot exhaust shoult the carb overflow. Very rare but it can happen, just stick a bit of pipe on it so it will leak off away from hot exhaust.

So -what size valves do you get on the stage 2 head ? Normally I would say dump the rockers - but in this case - to help that very 'soft' standard cam - they may actually be worth having - although whether they are 'value for money' in terms of extra power produced is very doubtful indeed!

* Oversize 27mm inlet valves
* 25.4mm exhaust valves

As the rockers are part of the kit I might as well replace the old ones with new.

Why does nearly everyone say Roller Rockers are bad for Minis??? I'm stumped as back in the states we put Roller rockers on our small/big block V8's almost immediately! It is a standard upgrade, no different than how people always slap on a K&N filter or a cold air intake. Pretty standard.

Are Roller Rockers just overkill for the A/A+ Series? I would think reducing friction is a good thing. So can someone enlighten me as I was thinking of putting 1.5 Roller Rockers on my MPi1275 (it is being converted to carb, HS4).
