Hi, I have a yr 2000 MPI and after it has stood for a week or so I try to reverse out of the garage and I get a resistance and the back of the car lifts when I try to move back. I accelerate and then it will give with a CUR-CLUNK and it's fine. I had the handbrake cable greased a while back which stopped the problem but it's back again any advise? It's been doing this on and off for over a year.

Is your garage level? If so then don't leave the handbrake on when it is parked in there.

More than likely the moisture and cold weather will be causing the brake shoes to stick to the drums so even when you release the handbrake they are not freeing off. It could be the mechanism or quadrants sticking but that's less likely - however a good servicing of the handbrake system wouldn't go amiss.

The garage is level but I really wanted a solution as it should really be on when parked. Plus if I get into the habit of not putting it on I might forget when I leave it somewhere else!!! :teehee:

The rear brakes were cleaned and serviced in December.

Thanks for the replies peeples!

I never use my handbrake on any of my cars when in the garage. Stops this happening and also lets me roll the car back and forth if I need to move it slightly.
It is generally advised not to use the handbrake if a car is left for long periods of time. Cables stretch, shoes stick etc. If the car can move unintentionally then chock the wheels.

Thanks chock! I'll take your advise on that.

It can also egg your drums if left for as long while.

take it for a good drive and make sure the rear drums dont rumble when you brake. Then get it home and jack it up and spin the rear wheels. They should spin, but bind ever so slightly. If they are hard to turn then either the handbrake is binding or theyre over adjusted.

how many clicks you got on the handbrake?

my brother had a similar problem with his old car it was a saxo and when he tried to reverse it would seem like the handbrake was on but it wasnt. then he took it to the garage and had to have his drums replaced i think because there was something wrong with them.

sorry for lack of detail just im no mechanic so :teehee:

In reply to handbrake clicks I think one or two. I'd have to check not many.

Definitely - DO NOT leave it on when parked in the garage! Leave it in gear - and put a brick behind the rear wheel if worried.

Reversing is the easy way to free binding drums, they're designed to pull themselves on harder when used going forward So when you got backwards they pull themselves..... you get the idea!

If you've only got one or two clicks id say your handbrake is overadjusted.

Should be a minimum of 3 maximum of 5 IMO thats what I always set them to.

Just leave it in gear handbrake off if its in a garage.
