guessing this just means a blown bulb but just wondering.

Are your rear lights working?? i know it sounds silly but when my dashboard lights stopped working so did my rear lights and turned out they were on the same fuse!

If not check your bulb...good luck

Most likely just a bulb. Take the instrument panel out and swap one of the other bulbs (oil warning light) with the speedo back light one. The bulbs are all the same.

On my mini I had one of the thin copper strips on the circuit board behind the instrument panel break. All I did was wedge a piece of wire between the bulb terminal and follow it around the circuit to where the other end of the copper strip joined another bulb. Worked a treat. Hope this happened to you but if so here is the solution.

Mine has a loose connection on the plastic multi-pin plug that goes into the back of the instrument panel. I sometimes have to reach under the dashboard wiggle it a bit to get the lights to come back on...

I normaly just give the clocks a good bash on the side. Seems to solve this problem every time. :)

Ahhh - I have suffered exactly this after breaking down in the rain on Wednesday - anyone know which fuse is the dash / rear lights, and do you know if they also run the fog light?

Thanks - will check it out....

Wednesday was a seriously bad day, Stopped at a garage and went to start her again and nowt, not even a light on the dash. Seems the alternator had not been charging, so, called out Green Flag, and they jumped me and off I went, only to find out that I had no tail lights, so I had to stop and call them out again to be delivered home - 60 MPH on the A3 with no lights is not fun!!!

This used to happen to me EVERY day. The dashboard lights would come on then go off, and then i realized this meant my rear lights also wouldnt work while the dahsboard lights were off.
Check the fuses. Mine werent blown but the connection in the holder wasnt correct. i think it was the bottom fuse that would move about in the fuse box. I just wrapped a bit of foil around it until i get i new fuse box thing.
Hope this Helps
