
Do I Have A Rod Or Remote Gearbox?

This might be a stupid question but i'm not sure because I don't have a clue about it. But whats the difference between Rod and Remote gearbox's??
Also which do I have?? I've got a metro turbo engine???

Rod change is the later cars!
Thats correct. A metro engine/box will be rod.

3 different things. Remote is the big aluminuim casting that is on early coopers etc. Rod change is the later system & 'magic wand' is what the early standard cars had.

Correct!!
Remotes aren't only on Coopers, standard late 60s and early 70s as well

Magic wand, early minis (I think @ MK2 restricted to 850's and commercials) with the long gearstick which leaves the cabin at the foot of the bulkhead...
Remote, Coopers and all minis upto about 73, big long aluminium casing from the back of the gearbox to the gearstick
Rod, 73 onwards, two rods ( the upper one of which is a stabiliser ) connected to the read of the gearbox

All Mini Coopers and Cooper S plus the MK2 Mini 1000 (except the 850) and early Clubman's got the remote change.
All Mini models and variants got the rod change from 1973.
