There may be nothing up with your battery if your Mini has not been run enough to keep it charged up. Can you not push start it or get the assistance of another car & jump leads?

A fully charged battery should still be ok after several weeks or months but it needs charging in the first place.

Bought a charger now as it seemed like the best place to start.

Thanks for all the replies. Top stuff as ever.

Well that didn't work!

Bought a charger and left it on all night, even flatter this morning, nothing on the voltometer in the car. I'll try it on a 24hr charge and then it's new battery time I think.

My Mini did the same exact thing. I only bought it a couple weeks ago and it had sat all LAST winter and was due to sit all this winter. However, when I met the guy to negotiate price it fired up no problems at all! I bartered with the guy and paid him then drove it home. The next day the battery was completely dead, so I jumped it with my truck and then took it for a quick spin. I got back, turned it off then tried to start it again, nothing....dead. Only the clicking sound of the solenoid then silence. I'm thinking that after sitting unused for so long that maybe the alternator kicked the bucket on the way home from buying it.

Just a couple days ago I jumped it and then let it warm up so I could adjust the idle. I adjusted it and revved it up a little to see how low it dipped RPM-wise after letting off the throttle and all sounded good. Until I turned it off! Somehow it jumped out of time! I don't know if the dizzy jumped a tooth or the chain stretched but it is out of time! I can't wait till this dreaded winter is over....I want my Mini running tops!

Just check all the connections mine did this... Make sure the cable attached to the solenoid is actually attached. Sorted mine its hard to see because its hidden beneath the distributor cap and coil cables and its attached to the starter motor. Try this before buying anything.

James.

The cold weather kills batteries and obviously it's been really bad lately. I've replaced 3 batteries on different cars since start of the year - all within warranty but all zonked by the cold. Once one cell goes down you're stuffed. When you get a new one either disconnect it when not in use for more than a few days (and put the battery inside somewhere) or use a battery trickle charger.
