Popped down the garage earlier to enquire about some tyres, 165/60R12s are £60 each fitted!
Just as I was leaving the bloke said that he could get second hand tyres for £20 each. I told him I might be back next week.
I was just wandering where these second hand tyres come from? Scrap yard maybe?
But it's kind of an odd size tyre to end up in a scrapyard.
Anyone know where they come from?
Cheers

I'm sure they come from lots of different sources but a tyre fitter I used to know would get tyres that had be thrown away as they were deemed unsafe to repair i.e punctures too near the sidewall or too large, he would then repair them and sell them on. I would not touch second hand tyres with a barge pole!

my mate pa owns a mot centre. every now and then he breaks up customers cars who have left the car after realising its not worth fixing. anyway, my mate then keeps the tyres, wheels, lights, bumpers, bonnets, brakes, battery and owt else worth keeping or ebaying. most of the cars even have aftermarket alloys on them so have different sized tyres.

also, another good source is from new company car services as they get money-no-object servicing most of the time

u rely on tires too much and if they're second hand they wernt good enuf for some1 els as they must have thought they were unsafe. if it were me i'd rather pay for the safety of it really

good point tho pepper

Choice, scrap vehicles and mainland Europe... We in the UK have a legal tread depth of 1.6mm where as mainland Europe Germany specifically I believe it to be 3mm.. and many are changed long before that level...

Avoid like the plague, brakes and tyres you do not skimp on ever. Might even be remoulds he is on about. Startlingly almost all trucks use remoulds.

Buses we work on have 215/75/15 tyres fitted , all which are remoulds and a very crappy fit and sometimes quality ( Sent back over 6 tyres with cracked walls after being only 1 or 2 weeks old !! )

At £20 a tyre they will be part worns , not worth the hassle as they will only last so much longer before you in the same situation . The thing that will shock you the most is where they say its £60 a tyre... they are most probably buying in the tyre for about £35ish pounds . Get friendly with someone in the trade and get them at trade price , buying tyres will never be expensive every again :-

If you ever in dorset nit down to the garage here , can get out the trade listings for our tyres and you can get a set of say even yoko's way cheaper then over the counter etc !!

I need one tyre for the back of one of my minis, so I might try it, see what he comes up with.
If they're ok then I'll buy 4 for my other mini. I really can't affor to spend £240 on tyres!

Never buy part worn tires from a garage

they have more than likely been taken off a car due to on of these things....

- uneven tire wear causing dogy hangleing and noise
- damaged when fitted (tends to be around the bead wont be seen when on the wheel but could leak
- been repared many times weakening the tire.
- or been repaired on the side walls due to slashes (this is highly not recomeded can cause acidents, it realy isnt safe since most tires the side wall already is the weakest place)

and if it hasnt got any of them it will be on the edge of legality and not worth bothering with

not worth your money you would be better off buying budgets althow i wouldent recomend this as well.

Think about how much a tire has to cope with, I wouldent want to risk it with them they are what help stop you make you go and keep you on the road and people go all skimpy with there cash when it comes to geting new ones.

Also be aware the "Dot" number on tires is its date of manufacture and where it was manufactured, so you may be aware that tires have a manufactures shelf life this is usualy around 4 years. In other countrys you arnt alowed to sell them after there four years, but in the UK there are no laws. So lots of tire places buy up out of date tires and sell them hear in the uk, where there are no laws Just something to think about. As tires do perish and grow weaker when left open to the air you dont want to be buying tires that have been sat around for years.

My thoughts exactly. I'd rather not drive my mini than drive it with part worns fitted.

Only exception is, if you know 100% the history of the tyres.

I'll have to look around then. I will try to find out the origin of these tyres, just in case.
It could turn out that he's got a set of mini wheels in his shed or something with good tyres on!
I wouldn't buy them unless I knew where they came from.
