hi i bought a donor car to help for parts to rebuild another mini, and whilst driving it around i noticed i crunched every so often in 3rd gear i think? question is, is it worth stripping down and replacing the syncro's, are they readily available and if so is it expensive? also what other common problems are found in the gearbox i should look out for whilst in there for repair?

Crunching into gear is a product of worn baulkrings. As mini gearboxes are starting to get old ( and some well past their sell by date ) they generally need a recondition. Other things to look for are the condition of the differential pin, the double roller and the layshaft, all of which will suffer wear over time..
Check the dog teeth on both the gears and the synchro hubs, if they've started to round off or are badly chipped then they again should be replaced..
All parts fo the 4 synchro' gearboxes are available off the shelf ( with the exception of quality single rollers at the moment which are in scarce supply until the next batch is available )

Baulkrings are about £10 each (and there a 4), i also changed my diff pin, layshaft with its small needle bearings and checked over everything. Alot of the time the main bearing next to the pinion, if it has a plastic bearing race these tend to break so possibly a new one of these. About £100 is reasonable with gaskets and possible tools required.
The pinion nut requires a deep socket, can't remember the size but its about 1 1/2 inch (will double check tomotrrow unless others know), some circlip pliers, a puller, breaker bar and some weight. Plus a haynes and follow the instructions in there.

Is it that bad you have to scrap it?? Boo (lol). Mini's are getting thin, is it not possible to pass it on for someone as a project??

it really is quite bad and i've robbed the engine subframe and running gear, would need doors, front end, floors, sills, boot floor, subframes, rear quarter repair, bit ambitious for me anyway!! especially when i've got a 79 1000 which was very original and had only every had a sill replacement in its life!! but still, if anyones keen??

Put it in the classified section at least for a week or so to give it a chance. Someone may have it for a mad RWD project or something. I know i would take it off your hands if you were down near me.

Unusual for the box to crunch into 3rd gear - it's usually 2nd gear that gives problems. But changing the baulk rings rarely make it any better - the gear 'dog' teeth will be ruined with the crunching - so I suggest at least new 2nd and 3rd gear - along with rings and any bearings that appear suspect will be the minimum work required.
