im loving the tailgate idea it makes me think about pinching my dads old pickup tailgate he has in his garage but i was thing what to do about the top half and it thought about using the top half of a fibreglass one peice.

That's not a bad idea that although I want to try forming a piece of 6MM lexan to the curves of the back end.

Absolutely love this project. Top work mate... Although you've nicked my idea of a split tailgate lol (not really haha...ive never told anyone just had it in my head for years lol) altho i was going to make it out of a one peice fibrglass and cut it in the middle and fibreglass the cuts up.

You probably have to add a lot of the strengthening to the inside or it would tear off if you put any weight on it but it'd be doable.

After much deliberation about how to lock the tailgate I've decided to go with a simple squeeze lock that will retract two pins from the door frame. Nice and simple and it'll barely cost me anything to build.
Posted Image

I started out by cutting a hole for the pinch tabs in the centre tailgate.
Posted Image

Then I drilled a hole in each side for the door frame for the pin to go into.
Posted Image

Last week a I cut a couple of thick steel squares and drill a 10MM hole in each to give the pin a little more support at each end. I've also spotted some little nylon top hats and the hardware store that I might insert into them.
Posted Image

The top of the frame was in dire need of strengthening so I made a top cap from 1.5MM steel and welded it on. This was unbelievably hard to bend but it's stiffened the frame up brilliantly.

I took a trip to the shops and found some nice 8MM i.d nylon stepped washers to use as bushes for the locking pins.
Posted Image

The holes in the tailgate and door frame needed drilling out to 11MM and then the stepped washers slotted right in.
Posted Image

Posted Image

I also picked up some 8MM mild steel rod to use for the pins.
Posted Image

After much chopping and welding I got one side 99% of the way there.
Posted Image

Posted Image

The mechanism still need a bit of tweaking but it's working the way I wanted.

So here it is after owning 3 different minis and never using any of them this is my first proper project mini.

It's a '72 Clubman estate bought on ebay for £505, it's got rusty doors all round, rotted out sills, a hole in the floor next to the battery tray and stained head liner but other than that it's pretty solid. The plan it to strip it down the a shell, give it a complete rebuild and do a few subtle mods along the way. We only just picked it up today so so far all I've done it remove the interior and start to list what needs repairing, what need replacing and what I want to add to it.

Hey

I just read through your build on the mig welding forum and saw your interesting supercharger setup. I am planning somthing similar but with a different charger. What did you do to get space for the charger there? I also want to fit it between the motor and the radiator.

Great build by the way!

Mad metal skills!

Thanks bud, I think epic's probably a pretty sound way of describing what I've gone through with this.

I'll be sitting the alternator down at the bottom of the engine which means the oil filter will be getting relocated to the N/S of the front subframe. Looking at the engine lengthways the charger will end up in the 2 o'clock position to try and narrow it a little and the front panel has been notched so the radiator can sit about an inch further forward than it normally would be able to.
Nothing hugely groundbreaking just lots of careful thinking.

Progress on the estate has really ground to a halt recently as I've been busy on customer projects but I'm hoping to whittle out a little more time to get this rolling again.

I have at least been buying shinny things to keep me happy starting with a set of Dunlop DJ93 tyres at about 35% off. :D
Posted Image

I also got a nice steering wheel that's currently on it's way to me from Portugal, kudos if you can guess what it's from.

Today was one of those aforementioned days when I managed to whittle out a little time to get something done that should have been finished ages ago.
When I pulled the old boot floor out the old mounts for the rear seat also went. I'd made the new captive plates to remount the seat ages ago but didn't get around to fitting them until this afternoon. I also tock the opportunity to move the seat base up at the front and rear to make it easier to hinge and fit carpet underneath.
