In most cases that is caused by the gear rod anti-leak o ring not correctly fitted. Check that.

If you've got a welder just cut the current linkage and add a piece of rod in. You'll have to grind the pieces into a point ==><== & build up the weld from the middle, I found clamping the 2 pieces together in a bit of angle iron keeps them straight. I've done this to a linkage before & is pretty easy.

The linkage cant be improved but if the two increasing rubbers are used the whols linkage will progress rather than the helps

Thanks guys youve just solved my commumdium I just coundn't fathom why my reverse gear keep jumping out of gear. And also not immediate problem with 2, 4 gear but I could tell something wasn't right. Ive fitted an late mpi engine into my 1973 clubman. Every thing seemed to fit and locate in the right place ie rod linkage that was fitted to previous engine (1990 metro engine). I know I should have saved that linkage from that knackard mpi mini. Whoops. But thanks again looks like I'm back on ebay tonight oh well .

The only reason the MPI sits forward is they have the mounting holes on the subframe in a different place, so unless you changed the subframe, your engine will still be in the same place, and you won't solve your problems by fiddling about with an MPI selector. Did you remember to put that spring and ball back in, the one that sits in the diff side cover? that stops reverse from popping out. (Detent plunger)
