Hi all, just finished the engine rebuild. However, the gearbox slips out of reverse gear and the reverse lights don't work. This may be because the gear lever doesn't pull back far enough for 2nd, 4th and reverse. I was wondering how do you adjust the gear linkage? Its an A+ engine and rod change box.

Many Thanks

I didn't think the gear linkage could be adjusted in any way???
My initial though for your problem was have you got the correct rod change for your engine? - is it an original part to your car? As if you have fitted a late MPi rod change, or a metro i beleive, these are different lengths (MPi=longer, don't know about metro), and they will give gear selection problems in the gears you have listed (2,4,R)

You don't. The steady bar above the selector rod should keep do the job.

The engine got all gears perfectly when it was removed (MG Metro). But I replaced the gearbox with a newer metro box. Any other ideas? The box worked perfectly when out of the car and the gearbox steady/stabiliser is in place.

Has the gear lever been removed and put back in the wrong way round?

Paul.

Nope, the lever and the linkage were never removed from the car, only the roll pin from the selector!!

Are the rubber mounts for the gearlever 'box' in good order?

I think this IS your problem; as my original post: all Metro & Mpi rod linkages are different lengths to the standard mini rod linkage change. Did you use the metro rod linkage? - if so, you need a mini linkage

he already said the gearlinkage has not been removed front the car so is nothing to do with the linkage being the wrong one

the linkage cant be adjusted but if the two mounting rubbers are worn the whols linkage will move rather than the rods

is the little bush in the gearbox casing whrer the upper rod bolts

only other thing can think if your sure gears worked outside the car is was the rod hanging down was the car moved is it bent

All rod linkages are the same length.

As said, I would check the rubber bushes.

~ also the MPi models had longer rods as the engine sits slightly forward compared to a standard engine / layout

I didn't know MPI's have longer rods but it makes sense. 2,4 & R are selected by pushing the selector into the box so this could be down to the engine leaning back too much or the stick being too high. It could be a fault with the gearbox, try removing the selector rollpin an selecting reverse with a screw driver.

Thanks guys youve just solved my commumdium I just coundn't fathom why my reverse gear keep jumping out of gear. And also not immediate problem with 2, 4 gear but I could tell something wasn't right. Ive fitted an late mpi engine into my 1973 clubman. Every thing seemed to fit and locate in the right place ie rod linkage that was fitted to previous engine (1990 metro engine). I know I should have saved that linkage from that knackard mpi mini. Whoops. But thanks again looks like I'm back on ebay tonight oh well .
