Hi all,

I have been and collected all the panels that I need to change the complete floor in my mini.
I know that the black paint on the reproduction panels (door steps, valance and a few other bits and bobs) needs to be removed, primed and painted properly, but the floor pan, heel board and sills are heritage panels.
The black paint on these heritage panels is different to that on the repo ones, so what I need to know is does this paint need to be removed and properly primed and painted aswel?

Thanks in advance!! :)

Surely you can just "key" the surface and then prime?

As above. You dont have to remove it. Just key it, prime it and paint it.

Yep as long as they are Heritage panels just key them up feather out and scratches in the coat and remove back to metal if you need to fill any areas. if cheaper panels they remove the coating you can usually tell by it flaking off or how easy it scratches off.

Sorry to mess it up, but I'm not sure if I'd trust any old black paint, heritage or not!! I suppose it's fine for stuff on the inside, but do you want it there on exterior panels, waiting to flake off under your pukka £0000's of shiny topcoat?!

I suppose the best thing to do it scuff it back really well and if you suspect the merest hint of flaking etc, remove it.

British Motor Heritage body shells and panels are produced utilizing traditional skills matched by the extensive use of modern materials, equipment and processes. All panel work is electrophoretically primed, offering the same level of corrosion resistance found on current vehicles.

Above from Heriage web site. A quick flat down to key the surface is all that is required. It is only neccessary to prep any areas of bare metal where the primer has burnt / ground off after welding with etching primer or similar. It's one of the benefits of using heritage panels, they fit better and are quicket and easier to paint, which makes them worth the extra you pay.

If you take the panel back to bare metal, it must be initially primed with self etching primer or it will flake off. Lovely stuff.

Does the Heritage site say whether it's the same primer they use on complete shells or not? That grey primer used on shells is a poly-urethane treatment and you need to cover it with a specific bonding coat before paint will stick to it.

Personnally I just key up the panels, rubbing out any scratches & filling any small dents, depending on how much bare metal is showing I will either etch prime then normal prime or just prime them up ready for paint. I have been doing this for years even with patten panels & have never had any paint flake off !!
