I am in the final stretch of the bodywork of my project mini.

The N/S 1/4 panel is rusty down by the sill join. I have got a full step and 1/4 anel repair but thinking of using sections of it just to patch the rust.

How does the rear side panel come off the B pillar, I am only removing and repairing the bottom 6" can i do a horizontal cut and just drill the spot welds off the pillar joint.

Also how much metal is at the bottom of the B pillar, do i have to go really careful with cutting the outer skin.

Any photo's would be great or I can try and do photo's of the problem if I have confused everybody, I read shiftys project but his looked really rotten and i dont want to chop that much out.

Cheers

I think you would be better off cutting it all out rather than just patching.
I suppose if its just rusted along the sill joint then you can get away with only cutting 1 or 2 inch upwards and then trimming down the new panel. This way it will be stronger than patches, and probably easier than patching. You will also end up with a better finish by doing the lot, than if you tried to patch it

Yes I see what you mean. I just would like to keep the seam/joint where the rear 1/4 fits to the pillar, the repair panel is just flat and would bug me.

I was going to use the rear 1/4 and leave a short section of the step under the B pillar and use the rest of the repair panel for the rust repair of the step and A pillar.

I will cut it all out and then look how best to fix it.

Yup, thats fine.

The full length steps with no stepped join bug me as well. Wherever possible I try and retain this joint. As you say the best way is to cut the repair panel in 2 and use it either side of the joint.

I've done this loads of times.

Ah great, thanks shifty, does the rear 1/4 seam that lips round the pillar come off fairly easy or are there any tricks.

So far so good.

Just a bit of cleaning up and the repair can go in, the pencil line at the top is the guide for the joggler (new toy).
