On the subject of networking, do it properly first time or you will regret it later when you have wires going round your skirting boards. Since your getting the house rewired go for it, as you say just a one in the corner of the main bedrooms, kitchen and I would recommend one in the living room (with all this home media stuff now). GraemeC is right though, it's very permanent. It's best to keep the locations logical and in a position where if possible they can be extended easily to any other point of the room (although that would be a last resort).
Where I live we have a modem under the stairs right next to the master socket, then a line going up to the loft and is patched into a patch panel. This then goes into a switch and drops down into the bedrooms and study. We have wireless too but I don't rate it much, great for portable devices but when I'm on a desktop (or even a laptop) I feel the slower speed when streaming media and stuff.

I put network in ours when we moved in and did some re wiring. We use wireless as well now but glad the network cables are in (2 wireless access points, one at either side of the house) and SKY HD has a network port for possible future upgrades. Switch is in the loft along with the tv distribution gear.
Put a tv aerial point in each room as well. Even if you don't end up using them, better than wanting one when you've just finished the painting.
Coving is good for hiding network and speaker cables behind (not mains power) although you may already have original in place given the age of the property.
As for sockets, think how many you need in each room then double it, you can never have too many. My office alone has 14 with 12 of them currently in use!!!
Edit: Do phone points as well whilst you're at it, the cable is cheap enough. Screwfix do a socket plate where you can have Cat 5 and Telephone in the same single sized socket face.

Can't even keep the living room warm in this weather, let alone the spare room!!

We gots plenty of wood for plenty of fires!

(Again!)

Oh - We have a bakery, that's not a problem!!

dsgoody & stevede - Thanks for the responses!! I definitely value the input on it - I think the networking will be worthwhile - to be honest, even if we don't use them all, at least it's there - And if ever the time did come for us to move on, it's there for whatever happens in the future.
We can do the basement another time though - That's going to be on it's own complete circuit... along with the garage!

I think the switch is more likely to be in the cellar, if I manage to steal it for an office

Talking of Sky, they have a good deal on at the moment, so looks like we could be getting broadband, phones & telly at some point soon!

{begin geek mode}
As sad as it is, I'm actually looking forward to proper broadband! Makes a change from the satellite broadband that we have now! - Plus the broadband in the area is all now fibre-optic cabling!

{end geek mode}

You still in the same place as when I came up, Chris?
Aye I am, but I've decorated pretty much every room since you came up thus removing the ex's influence from pretty much everything because she had crap taste

I wouldnt mind wiring my house out with network cables but I've hidden the phone cabling under the flooring anyway and there's only one wired phone in the house:
(not that actual one but its identical)
..and the rest are cordless so I haven't got a need for it. I wouldnt have minded helping with it as a little project if I were nearer

It's always amused me how 999 is the emergency number, but the 9 is nearly at the end, lol

Preparations going on at the moment, for the demise of the kitchen wall!

Will report back when I know more!
