Aww! Sorry, I didn't see this reply! D'oh!!

It's gorgeous, isn't it? :)

In other news, I've been stripping the door frames!!

(Which is quite good for me .. as I hate the way that paint stripper reacts - It makes me feel all itchy and ikky!

If there's lots of frames to be done, and there's plenty of paint on them, it might be cheaper to get someone in to media blast them - you could go through gallons of paint stripper and still not get it all off (been there, done that!)

I think you're right, Graeme! There's a guy just up the road from our house that does blasting, we actually thought about going to see him to do our doors & skirting boards etc?

I just don't like the look of them at the moment - As they've been painted with really thick gloss paint & it doesn't look particularly 'clean'! :)

The kitchen ones, I'll do now though - As we really want to get this one room sorted and finished! :)

Bean,

probably best getting them stripped/dipped rather than blasted. this way they are soaked in acid then sprayed in an alkaline solution afterwords. so they can be left natural or ready to be re painted.
had this done on the previous house and they looked amazing afterwords - mum mentioned something about vinager to keep them good though - i'll ask her why though

Dip the doors yes - but frames, casings, architraves, skirtings you are more likely to damage when removing.
Blasting will leave the wood just as clean and be suitable for repaint or being oiled and left bare. I have seen oak beams blasted and the outcome is superb.

Cheers for all the advice!! :)

Would blasting be too damaging for the doors then, or .. ?

I, personally, want to repaint everything - Skirting, frames, doors etc - But K wants to have the doors stripped!

We'll see who wins!!

If they are old, original doors & mouldings in good condition an oil or similar would look good.

One consideration which may sway you, (can't do it reallly at our house as it's too new and the mouldings are basic), is that white or similar paint on the architraves & skirtings will show marks very easily, where as an oiled or stained finish will hide them very well and be easy to touch in.

Have fun

Steve

Dammit! :P Stop siding the wrong way!! :P

Lol :withstupid:

Naaah - I get what you're saying & it does make sense ... but I love the look of the details painted just off-white ... like a slightly warmer shade of white, if that makes sense! And if anyone comes near my skirtings or architraves with grubby hands or feet, they'll be cleaning it all themselves, before they leave >_<

I think you should win Bean :P - the woodwork in houses the sort of age yours is was never intended to be left bare or have the grain exposed - they were nearly always painted. Problem is over the years the paint builds up and all the detail in the mouldings gets lost so stripping them back and repainting makes them look a million times better! Covings on ceilings suffer from the same sort of thing too.

You're a gent, Jayare - I think you're right!! :D

(K's sitting here not too impressed though!! Heheh!)

That was my thought behind stripping them back, really - They just didn't look like delicate details any more, just a bit thick and messy - I figured stripping them back and re-doing it would just give it a bit more finesse?

Anyways!!

Busy day at the house again today - things are really moving forwards!!

More info & photos tomorrow though - We've only just got back in & the 3 of us are absolutely shattered !!
