you had that on a rolling road whats the bhp like?12g295 head
alloy inlet manifold
hif38
exhaust system with lcb
pipercross air filter
I would recommend the kent 266. Thats what i have in my 998 and im really happy with it. Heres my engine spec for comparison (its pretty similar):
998 block, standard size bores & pistons (flat top)
12g295 head, skimmed to suit & mildly ported
hof38 on a ported mg metro inlet manifold
lcb & rc40
kent 266 & minispares steel vernier timing gear
k&n stub stack in a k&n cone filter
With the 266 the idle is hardly any lumpier than the standard cam, and it pulls from really low down too. Theres a little bit more power at the bottom end and considerably more through the midrange and top end, once the revs are up past 3000 it really goes. I personally wouldnt want anything any wilder as it still has plenty to give at 6000rpm, and its my daily car so i dont want it to be a pain in traffic etc. Im currently running the standard 3.1 final drive but this is next on the list for changing, as now it seems a little tall for such a revvy little motor. Hope this helps.

I think that there is too much talk about what cams can do in terms of power. For city driving power is not the issue whereas torque is. I put a 276 into my 1275 S and it was a nightmare for city driving. It wouldn't tick over and it took off at 2500RPM which is dangerous in a city situation. So basically it was uncontrollable. I put a 266 into my 998 bog standard Cooper and it is a dream. It has great low rev pull and goes to the top 6000rpm without difficulty. I beat Alfas and BMWs from the lights regularly. I've since offloaded the 1275 Cooper S and I'm now building a 1071 engine and I'll be putting a 266 into that. So don't get hung up on specs. Driveability is more important. That's my tuppence worth. I hope it helps.
I imagine they sorted it, the initial thread was posted 12 years ago!

As stated, what is needed is good mid-range torque.
In respect of modern cams, the Evo001 seems to be great in both small- and large-bore engines.
