Hi everyone, its not strictly for my mini but I'm sure the same rules would apply (its a dolly running twin HS6's) and if it does work then perhaps I could try it on the mini as well. I have asked on dolly forums but I thought the mini community have tried just about everything and might know.

Anyway I have been wondering about a CLA intake system and whether it is possible to fit it to a carb? I was thinking about fitting a K&N apollo (picture below) to my hs6's, I have a plan of how to do this but I don't know if it will be ok for the carbs. I am only considering this because my ram pipes must be sucking very hot air from the exhaust manifold and it would also get the induction noise down just a little. The car in question is running 130+BHP.

Is it possible with a carb? Had anyone done anything like this to SU carbs?

Thanks in advance,

Dale

I have a CAI on the MX5, but not the k&n which is a bit overpriced, and it works fine.
I dont think will be a good choice on a n/a carb mini, due to airbox pressures etc..

Minis don't really need these things because there is tons of cold air flowing through the bonnet. Can't say I'd know if that were the same for a Dolly. The thing is that because of that, people who actually tune Minis don't really use these so probably don't know much about them. People who read Max power like them and I know of many members who have fitted one and then removed it because it gets in the way and doesn't do much. I doubt the engine bay of the Dolly is sealed up well enough to make this kind of thing worthwhile. The only reason they work on modern injected cars is because they have all sorts of air dams and guides behind the rad and very tightly sealed engine bays with tiny air inlets for the intake system. There is not a very good supply of cold air designed in to the vehicle. If you want one of these to make any kind of difference to a car that already gets a good enough supply of cold air then it takes some building. For one thing you can't use flexible tube, especially not convoluted, corrugated junk like this. The convolutions cause air turbulence around the inside of the pipe that effectively reduce its diameter to about 2/3 of what it actually measures. You have to make the whole length of pipe flow properly, large radius blended curves and smooth straight pipe runs where possible. They also have to be pretty rigid. Have a look at some Miglia cars, some of those use very advanced cold air feeds that are very well engineerd and make a meaurable difference at speed.

Rules is rules, moved to general chat.

Ok thanks for the in depth reply's. :( I think in that case ill just stick with ram pipes.

Thanks,

Dale
