I think the minispares kit for 1275 with HIF44 carb will come with a BDL needle, which is a good starting point.

i think the kit comes with it. though i just realised that i didnt change the needle in my hs4 when i went from a 998 to a 1275..... should i have done this?

It would certainly be worth checking with Mini spares or mini sport on the correct needle as I suspect your mixture will be a little lean

Oh you're lucky if you got the correct mixture without replacing the needle, you could roughly adjust idle but under load wouldnt work fine, usually on 1275s and 998s are used different profiles depending on engine specs. In some cases an AAA needle should work on both engines, surely a AAC (used on many standard 998 engines) wont.
About your next carb swap, HIF44 and HS4 needles arent interchangable, the HS4 uses 0,09" needles and the HIF44 uses 0,1" needles.

to be honest, i can only notice a small difference in power between the 1275 and the 998, so maybe i should double check the needle. then again, i might aswell wait untill my stage one kit (i think tere is a kit for hif44 carbs with needle)

Yes, they usually come with a new needle (which in must cases is useless) but not the spring.
