I need to replace the Inner pot joint boot. I have the outer part (the heavy bit that goes into the diff housing) off as well as the cage and ball bearings. But I can't bet the inner bit off the drive shaft.
As I understand it there's a O ring that sits in grooves in both the shaft and the joint. I've tried beating it with a hammer and drift but no joy. It moves ever so slightly so I know it's not siezed on or anything.

Anyone got any tips?

Cheers

Undo the outer CV joint gaiter and roll it back along the shaft towards the inner joint.
Now grip the shaft in the jaws of a good solid vice with the outer CV joint downwards.
Take a 'lump' hammer and really give the outer CV joint a good whack or two downwards. It'll come off then, so mind your feet!
The 'O-ring' is in fact a circular wire clip which may need to be replaced if it has sprung so far out that it needs a high level of 'clout' to remove the CV joint. If undamaged it can be squeezed in a bit to help re-fitting, although that's not normally a problem.
Make sure you don't get any DGS (that's Dirt, Grit and S***) into the joints or they won't last long.

Thanks very much. It's actually the inner joint I wanted to take off, but I can get the outer off i can slide the boot on from that end.
Is that what you'd suggest?

Yes, that's the best way to do it.

I replaced the boot without removing the ball cage, if you pop all the balls out, the rubber will stretch enough to go over the cage then the cable tie pulls it back together, just take it slowly and it helps to warm the rubber first.

Quick tip; make sure that the rubber itself and the metal surfaces that the rubber fits to especially on the 'bell' of the outer race are clean and free of any grease before you try to fit the cable ties otherwise no matter how tight you try to get them the rubber will slip off.
