the courtesy lights work by having a permanent power supply to them with a wire going down to a door switch

the door switch earth's the cable when the door is opened and then completes the circuit

I'm not sure about the actual wiring of the courtesy light switch, but I know that unscrewing it and giving it's rear a good clean helps. Plus the actual screw earth's it I believe and so that needs to be clean too. I have used Cooper Grease on the threads in the past and not had any more problems with mine.

As for that wire behind your dash, that sounds like the spare wire (there is another, one has a spade terminal and the other has a bullet connector) that's used when the triple clocks which include a tachometer (rev counter) are fitted.

So their there if you want to add a standard Mini rev counter and there should be a spare wire by the coil too, unless it's already connected?

Does your curtesy light work when you switch it on at the light itself?

If not then it could simply be the bulb blown or you may not be geting power to it.

You should test for power at the purple/orange wire in the curtesy light uit. If you don't have any means of testing for power see:
http://www.theminifo...=voltage tester

The curtesy light is on the same fuse as your hazard lights so if they work the fuse is ok, if they don't then you will find the fuse in an in-line fuse holder against the bulkhead behind the carbuetter (you might need to take the air filter box off to get at it).

If your hazards work and your courtesy light works with the switch but not when the door opens then the door contacts will need cleaning.

The door switches have a single purple/white wire connected to them which earths when the door is opened so you can test if the circuit works by simply earthing that wire.

The door switches are not expensive and it's probably best to renew them rather than clean them as their springs weaken or break, and once the contact surfaces have rusted they will never be very efficient.

As has already been said, the black/white wire behind your speedo is the pulse feed wire for a rev-counter (tachometer). The other end of it should be connected to the negative terminal of the coil but might just be hanging lose by the dizzy, it doesn't matter either way.

It does not connect to a live. It goes straigt to the curtesy light switch in the curtesy light unit.

The way to test if it is connected is to simply unplug the wire at the door switch and hold it against a good earth. (the wire not the switch).

You are then doing the job of the door switch.... so:

If the light works you are either not getting a good contact inside the switch, or the switch body is not earthed against the door post; clean the mounting point.

If the light doesn't work then the wire is either damaged somewhere along its length, or possibly, there may be a connector somewhere near the passenger door switch where the purple/white wires from both doors join together before going up to the light. If there is one it may have become disconnected.
