Hi guys,

What does everyone use to tidy up the aluminium parts on their engines (transfer case, gearbox case)?

I want a new aluminium look to them, dont want them to look like they've head 30 coats of paint on them (hope that makes sense).

Thanks.

Paul.

Im assuming this is the finish you mean? combination of GUNK, a scrubbing brush & wire wool.

have them dipped? will need full strip-down and reassembly, but its worth the effort, then either paint with satin silver, or polish and laquer :D

I used a wire brush drill attachment to get off all the corrosion. Then gave them a wipe down with white spirit, then etch primer, primer and aluminium spray paint from halfords. Its not actually for aluminium, its just the name of the colour.

I'm pretty happy with how they came out:

Sorry, no. You do not paint aluminum parts. You clean all the crap off them then buff them up with steel wool, just the way God intended:

I tend to agree, ali should be left in it's virgin state, however, when asked to paint a box, I etch prime, and then spray in what ever colour the client wishes... having first masked off any of the places I dont want sprayed and charged them for the pleasure.

how do you go about that then, just rubbing across the surface? it looks good, iv shot blasted my old housings before and after time just dulls as aluminium tends to do so, would a layer of laqure solve this?

best to wire brush then scotchbrite, then you could autosol it got get it shiney, wipe down
with a thinner or panel wipe and laquer to give some protection to it..
