Cooper S Brakes

Hi all

I'm trying to make the best brakes out of what I have fitted to the car, at present I have Cooper S cailpers, groved discs and I think EBC green pads. I will be upgraded the brakes some time in the future, but for the moment I need to use the Cooper S set up. Here is what I was thinking, over haul the cailpers with S/S pistons and new seals, KAD drilled/groved discs and new pads maybe EBC reds! What do you think?? What sort of set do they use on Mini Se7en cars as they have to use the Cooper S set up and they seem to stop alright!!

And one last question, what are your thoughts on the KAD Adjustable bias pedal box? any adivice or reviews from people using this set up?!

If it's a road car then there's absolutely no point putting reds on, they will never get hot enough...

I have/had no problem with Mintex pads when using solid S brakes, but did have alloy 4 pots, but no reason why the cooper S callipers would not be any different, just a slightly bigger surface area on mine.

As for Mini Se7en's this is from the 2009 regluations...

TR.5.11 BRAKES
5.11.1 Permitted Modifications:
5.11.1.1 i) Mini Se7en S-Class and Mini Miglia S-Class only;
The standard pedal assembly and a single master cylinder assembly must remain
ii) Mini Se7en and Mini Miglia only;
Pedal position. Where the original pedal assembly is replaced by a pedal box (floor mounted or otherwise), with the pedals in
their free position, the minimum distance from the pedal (including any plate or block attached thereto) to the cross member is
300mm.
Brake/Clutch fluid remote reservoirs are prohibited from the cockpit.
5.11.1.2 Disc Pad and Shoe Lining Material is free
5.11.1.3 Minifin or Super Minifin or similar brake drum replacements are permitted
5.11.1.4 i) Mini Se7en S-Class and Mini Miglia S-Class only;
Standard hand brake with cables to each rear drum must remain operational
ii) Mini Se7en and Mini Miglia only;
Hand Brake; unless fitted with twin circuit braking system an operational Hand Brake is mandatory
5.11.1.5 Cockpit brake balance adjuster valves are permitted but must be in accordance with MSA G108-111.
5.11.1.6 Mini Se7en S-Class and Mini Se7en only;
Brakes are limited to:
i) Production Twin/Single leading shoe drum brakes
ii) Cooper Discs and Calipers
iii) Cooper “S” Discs and Calipers
iv) Standard 7” Rear Drum systems only
5.11.1.7 Mini Miglia S-Class and Mini Miglia;
Brakes are free except:
i) Carbon discs are prohibited
ii) Rear disc brakes are prohibited
iii) Maximum number of front caliper pistons - 4 per caliper

My mini is going to be used for Hill climbs and tarmac rallies, so I would use EBC Greens for Hill climbs and Reds for the rally, I just want to make them work as well as they can!

I had seen the reg's for the Mini Se7en, I was just wonder what actual parts they use (pads Mintex/EBC etc)

i wouldnt bother with EBC pads as have had green stuff before and were very poor compared to standard mintex pads. i would be looking into the mintex 1144 range personally.

Cooper S brakes are excellent - if you are having problems - are you sure the rear brakes are doing their share ? Adjust the bias to the rear until you get some wheel locking - then bring it forward slightly. It makes a huge difference. Maybe you should try standard plain discs - I had no problem braking - Tour of Mull Rally - with standard discs and DS11 pads. The answer of course is to 'carry the speed through the corner' rather be braking all the time !

Can't recommend these highly enough - available from Mini Spares - have used them on the Monte and RAC Historic. Might seem expensive but £60 doesn't go far if trying to fix bent bodywork or suspension!

Yes I have seen these pads and they did chatch my eye, I think I will have to order my self a set of them;)

No I'm not having problems with my brakes at all, I just want them to work very well, thats why i'm asking what people think of my suggested set up. My mini is getting an overhaul for next years season, and I dont have the £$ to buy KAD 4 pots, so I just want t make the best out of the Cooper S brakes.

You can rebuild them with anodised alloy pistons, which will be lighter than S/S and work and cost exactly the same.

I'd say rebuild them with new pistons + seals, fit some mintex pads and new discs (I like grooved ones, cross-drilled is pointless!). They should work faultlessly after that, and if they are running hot, get some higher temp pads. Cooper S brakes are good provided they are in good condition :D

Also I have another question, with Cooper S cailpers can you fit 7.9 discs? (as shown on the KAD website) do you need to do any modes to the cailpers?

And back to my very fisrt question has any used the KAD Adjustable bias pedal box?

Wasn't these, but looked similar (I suppose they all look similar). They'll be a gunmetal satin colour. I don't know if these are alloy or coated steel/SS. You'll ahve to email the seller and ask.

Can't find the ones I got anywhere at the moment, sorry!
