Yeah I do like that one Eric :mrcool: we got lucky though mate as they shut the barriers straight after we went out so we had an empty track bar one bike, its the best way to view it for the first time, also your 998 did not disappoint, my 'crew' with me agreed

Not sure if I'll be there in May, would like to go but we'll see

You'd have to be insane to do it in the first place! But cheers :D

Hows it all progressing ?

Slow as I haven't had as much time as I'd like on it, but to be honest I'm just daubling on it as and when as I'm more than happy at the moment to let other things (life!) get in the way as although the car is far from done cosmetically it has been driven here there and everywhere so its got nothing to prove on the getting it on the road front

It will be finished eventually :whistling:

In the meantime I might aswell throw in a little update for what its worth

The car has been laid up for about 4 months, last time I used it was in september at the rolling road which was a couple of weeks after getting back from Germany, at the rolling road the rear silencer had fallen off! so that was obviously one thing to sort out and also had a pin hole leak from a CV boot gaitor so these things needed sorting out first

Before all that I just wanted to make sure it still started up using 3.5 months old worth of fuel, battery was showing 9.5V so quick charge and it started first key

Posted Image

Coolio

Started off with taking the driveshafts out, both didn't need to come out but you know what its like...

Posted Image

Had a bit of trouble getting the hub off one shaft so took the whole lot out to investigate why, after some help from this forum it looked like some water had got in and and caused a bit of surface rust which made it difficult (thanks tiger99) so quick clean up and back together

Then the rear silencer falling off bit...

The night before I took it to Germany I was still welding up the front section of the link pipe but still had a few pin holes as I could feel it blowing out but as I was out of time I just ran it like that, it felt slower than before but it got me there did a couple of laps and got me back, when I got back I found the pin holes and welded them up, car was running good so then took it to the rolling road a couple of weeks later

The rear silencer was being held up by two powerflex hangers and when the middle silencer was added it looks like the additional weight of the middle silencer ripped both hangers apart. I'm just lucky the hangers ripped and dropped the rear silencer at the rollers and not at the 'ring a couple of weeks beforehand as the middle silencer was added quite a while ago

I wasn't too worried about the rear silencer dropping as I had a flexi section up front so nothing was getting stressed apart from that flexi as thats what its there for, but when I started the car up I could see some 'dust' being moved on the floor under the car so went to investigate and found some 'puffing' coming out from the flexi section

Dropped the whole exhaust off as one and lifted the front manifold gently, before it would rise with some resistance from the flexi (a gentle bend) now it was lifting loose and you could feel it kinking - looks like the flexi got too stressed when the rear section fell off :(

Not much I can do to repair it so I'm gonna lose it, so chopped it off (the cut in the flexi is what I done after it was on the bench)

Posted Image

Luckily when I put the middle silencer on I kept the link pipe section I cut off, so this will now be used to join it up, bit of jiggling and it should be fine

No major plans for the car at the moment as it looks a state on the outside and needs a respray, would love to try and get this exhaust on and at least try to take it to Brooklands as I'm itching for a drive but we'll see

Exhaust is all finally done, sits pretty low so gotta watch them humps a bit more now...

After final positioning I had to lose the KAD rear anti roll bar, I couldn't get them to work together so out of the two the bar obviously had to go! End of the day this is a road car so the bar was wasted with my ability anyway

I took it out for a nice long test drive as its been four months since I last drove it and there was only one downside, since I last drove the mini I have bought myself a daily driver which is a manual (last was an auto) and getting back in a mini with its gears/suspension/noise was a culture shock and pretty scary to honest!!! O_O

With the exhaust all sealed up properly it picks up VERY nice as there's no loss of power, it did surprise me big time but I'm finding now when it hits vtec in second it torque steers a bit, in thirds onwards its fine on song but you need to be on your toes with the first two

Posted Image

Mechanically the car is nearly done, cosmetically it is VERY far from, but it was dam good to be driving a mini again :mrcool: even though my hands were shaking when I got home :whistling:

As the car seemed to be running well I thought I would pop my other wheels on and get a vid done of some driving so started changing one front, no problems, then the other and one of the wheels nuts kept spinning on the wheel stud and spinning and spinning and spinning and spinning and you get the idea - bugger! :(

Had to angle grind the nut to get the wheel off

Posted Image

You could spin the stud with your hand, took the flange off, the stud spline was goosed but the other three were ok? Studs on the front were only about a year old?

The flange spline wasn't looking too rosey on that one so I decided to change that (flanges were bought secondhand) but then figured this would be a good time to go over to vented discs from my solids as I need to buy new flanges anyway

So picked up a caliper spacing kit for my 4 pots and some vented discs alongwith some 4 pot flanges and some mintex pads

Posted Image

I was using carbon metallic pads before so will see how good these mintex are, these are not the 1144's

Will try and crack on with this as I would like to buy some new wheels... :whistling:

Hey Paul

Yeah mate I will be, the plates/blades were installed but the bar wasn't so its never been hooked up to the blades so its never had any load on it as I kept having issues with clearance against my custom rear silencer. There is still an attachment thats on the car on the rear drum backplates so I'll let you know when I have took them off, not sure when I'll get round to it though so hope your patient...

Don't worry Jamie you'll be on standby just incase
