Now that's the spirit! Nothing quite like diving head first into something that you have no idea how to do. I just figure the Honda scene is so massive that there's always comprehensive info on how to do things correctly.

pssst: deck the head

Kam, I read that you've kept records of all your expenses. Would you be willing to do a price breakdown of what you've spent? I don't really have an estimate for my B18C5 swap that I'm in the middle of, but I bought a totalled 2001 Acura Integra Type R to get the drivetrain so I'm still trying to part out the rest of the car to recover costs.

Here is where I'm at right now:

I only have access to my car 5 days a week with limited hours (and a conflicting work schedule) so this project is taking a LOT longer than I had hoped.

I went in blind mate with a budget pretty much plucked from thin air  No two builds are ever the same and as everyones ideas and abilities differ my total costs won't really help anyone else

You've got a good kit there and your lucky you was able to get a good donor car (have you got a build diary on here?) unfortunately I haven't got the space to break another so I ended up buying parts separate which was a massive headache on the costs, you will re-coup your costs though after your finished with the donor car

As for costs, get a folder and label it "For no eyes only" and start putting receipts in there and never look inside ;)

Don't worry about the time factor, not every build has to be done asap, fit it in and work on it while you can, it will get done and the end results speak for themselves

Good luck with it

Kam, did you run all new fuel lines for your car, or are you using some or all of the stock lines?

New ones mate, its half way down on page 6. After taking out the fuel tank and having the front subframe off it would be rude not to as it was all off, my lines are 0.8mm OD, if you can get some 0.8mm ID then go for that but 0.8mm OD will suffice

Also my lines at the rear run 'above' the rear subframe, so I can pull the subframe off without touching the fuel delivery system :)

Get a build diary up if you haven't already, I know its a PITA but it will help others help you

Not much done so far, but as I've got a couple of days off during xmas (thanks xmas :D ) I should hopefully get some more done, its either sit indoors and watch the rubbish on tv or escape to the garage, no brainer that one

I've decided to take the valves out of the head, was dreading this a bit, not sure why though, I aint done it before but I think because all this car needs is a new clutch I know the rest is running fine so I don't want to mess anything up, but sometimes you just gotta learn so just do it!

Started off with taking the rocker shafts and rockers off, you need a 12mm bolt to feed through to pull them out.....but I aint got one here but luckily one of my engine stand bolts is 12mm......so I borrowed one of the four.....no problems :D

To get to these valves you need a deep valve spring compressor, you might get away with it on a SOHC but on a DOHC no chance, I nearly bought a 'normal' one but luckily I found out I need the more expensive one :trooper: Clicky link

Posted Image

And also one of those little magnetic telescopic pens (which is an absolute god send!) for picking out the collets

Posted Image

We have a valve out!

Posted Image

I was so pleased with myself, my first valve  Definitely not as daunting as I thought it would be for some silly reason, trust me I am in way over my head now!

Posted Image

Posted Image

All that shopping at mini spares and saving them little bags has finally paid off, somewhere to keep all the valves seperate and in order

**An earlier pic**

Posted Image

I need to scrape and clean the top of the piston but was getting paranoid about debris falling into the water jacket, but came up with an solution - turn the engine stand round you idiot! :)

Posted Image

Posted Image

Sorted

I've just found out earlier my Kamcover :) and skunk2 inlet have both been powdercoated and ready to be sent back, but they couldn't do the Kambelt cover as its plastic and possibly might melt in the oven  so I'll probably just spray it black when its here, no biggie, the other two are the important ones

Hopefully I can get scraping and cleaning the pistons and head over the next couple of days, unless there is something awesome to watch on tv over xmas

pssst: deck the head

Is that american slang for skimming the head and raising compression or something? over here I'm sure it means to give someone a punch in the face, if you think that'll help my engine then I can easily find someone round here for that :)

Yes, you can deck the head/block to bump compression if you want or to fix a lightly warped head. Getting decked in the U.S. would be just as painful, but the term isn't used as much anymore.

The next day I've got some free time and the shop (where my car is stored) is closed I'll probably get to doing a build diary. I've been so busy lately with work and what little free time to work on the car that stopping to take pics has been something I've had to remind myself to do.

Yeah you guys just shoot nowdays, I prefer the 'old skool' approach myself......bring back fists :)

I know your busy, I've had times (on here) where I thought "whats the point in taking a picture as I've got things to do and can't spare the time now and upload and post it later" but believe me people can help out, I certainly wouldn't of got this far without any help from here or other forums thats for sure, its a pain but a worthy one, your ability might differ from mine but I'm sure the stress will be the same, the diary hasn't got to be detailed, just there for people to see

Reshaping the head. Just trying to give you some ideas while you have it all torn apart :xmas:

Same head that I posted, after machining:

Ahh no worries, I see what you mean, that is some nice work but a bit too much work for me, besides the head would have to be sent away which means more money being spent....

Don't worrying about thread jacking its all ideas for people to see so it does help, that is unless you start posting pictures up of something like your pets or local streetlights or something :xmas:

I have a chance to buy a type-r head now with all the valvetrain but I'm not sure yet whether I want it or not, would like to see how I get on with this, whipping the head off later to change it isn't that hard actually, so we'll see

Found this little link, some helpful bits on there to explain the differences between the B16a and B16b and other bits and bob

If the head is a good deal I'd go ahead and jump on it now while you can. If you change your mind you can always flip it later and break even...maybe even get some cool points by selling it to a forum member. :xmas:
